Samurai Champloo Volume 4

By Spencer . January 26, 2006 . 2:30pm

Mugen, Jin and Fuu continue their search for the samurai who smells of sunflowers, but they don’t get any real clues in episodes 7 & 8. In episode seven Fuu plays damsel in distress again. Before she can even get kidnapped by the thief, he steals all of their money. Soon Fuu learns there is a reason his theft and maybe this crook isn’t such a bad guy after all. The eighth episode has the three deseparate for money. After days of journeying without food or a bed to rest in, they decided to pawn Jin’s glasses for some quick cash.

Jin losing his glasses isn’t such a bad thing since another warrior with his beatbox entourage is looking to kill a certain Samurai who happens to wear glasses. Volume 4 focuses less on action and instead provides essential background on each of the characters. We finally learn about Jin’s past and get a glimpse of why Fuu is on her journey to find the samurai who smells of sunflowers.

Like all of the other previous Samurai Champloo releases, the UMD disc takes advantage of the PSP’s widescreen format. It has animated menus, a Japanese language track and English subtitles. Also included, as in all Geneon releases, are a bunch of trailers for upcoming shows. If you’ve been following the series you’ll want to pick up Volume 4, but if you’re a casual watcher check out some of the earlier discs first.
