Azumi: from orphan to assassin

By Rosamond Tsao . July 5, 2006 . 9:23am

Can’t get enough of pure cut-throat, wry humor, action-packed entertainment?  Urban Vision Entertainment’s "Azumi" is the one to look out for.  This manga inspired live action movie is directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, who also worked on the international 2000 hit "Versus."  He is also the most celebrated Japanese action director, who aims to bring back "chambara" films of simple action stories about good versus evil into the silver screen.  Aya Ueto stars as the lead heroine Azumi who is among ten orphans that were chosen to be trained as assassins after the Battle of Sekigahara.  Before leaving their training grounds in the mountains, their numbers are reduced to five after going through the final test of loyality.  Ultimately, Azumi goes through a killing spree, and attempts to become the survivor of the fittest.  Azumi is getting a limited theater release on July 28th.
