Where you need to go to score cheap games in Japan

Unlike the USA where games are priced relatively the same from store to store, video game prices fluctuate in Japan. Since each store has a different price for the same game you can save a bundle by being at the right store at the right time. “There is no magical shop which always has the best deals; though some are better than others. You have to identify five or ten good game shops and spend some time every week checking them for new deals” says Alex Kierkegaard about buying games in Japan. For all of you guys shopping in Akihabara, Alex wrote up a guide for game shopping in Electric Town.

Here are his top ten picks:

1.) Media Land (メディアランド)

2.) Book Off (ブックオフ)

3.) Gamers (ゲーマーズ)

4.) Messe Sanoh (メッセサンオー)

5.) Sofmap (ソフマップ)

6.) Lammtarra (ラムタラ)

7.) AsoBitCity

8.) Tokiwamusen (トキワムセン)

9.) Yamagiwa Soft (ヤマギワ ソフト)

10.) Ishimaru Game One (ゲームワン)

How can you have a top 10 list and not mention Traders? They’ve got some very decent deals on used games and they often have rare and hard to find titles though you’ll often pay market value for them. Ubook has some great deals on games especially if you’re into collecting Saturn titles. Sometimes their used game prices are a bit hit and miss though. But every now and again, if you check their bargain bin near the counter you’ll find some great deals on older releases still new in the package. But as far as I’m concerned Sofmap is number one for used game deals. If you’re lucky enough to find a rare game there you can almost guarantee it will be a couple of thousand yen lower than Traders or Liberty or any of those other places.
