So we were walking around the exhibit floor at Comic-Con and saw this black booth labeled “The Darkness” with a mini zombie in the front terrorizing girls. We scratched our heads and thought, “hmmm… this might be interesting,” and walked right in.
“The Darkness” is a comic book by Marc Silverstri and produced by Top Cow. The story begins with Jackie on the night of his 21st birthday. As he’s caught up as a hitman in the mafia affairs, someone in the “darkness” has different plans for him.
Little did we know, Marc Silverstri, artist/creator of The Darkness, and Matt Hawkins, president of Top Cow, were also watching the trailers right behind us. Naturally, we asked for an interview.

After getting a snapshot of Marc and a darkling, we got down to the questions. With the release of next generation consoles, Marc was excited to finally bring Jackie to the console. He told us, “The game’s something you always have in mind.” But with the limitations of previous consoles, it would have been pointless to put such a graphic consuming game on such a system. Or as Marc would have put it, “the best you can hope for is Oddworld.” Don’t get us wrong; Oddworld was champ for its time, but its time to step over and let the heavyweights give it a try.
Marc and Matt were happy to work with the talents at Starbreeze for the creation of The Darkness’ world. Marc explained, “because of their creative vision and they have a great eye to create dark and moody worlds. The look and feel of the game in some cases is better than the comic.” Now that’s something to look forward to.

Now down to the features of the game. The Darkness is coming out for the Xbox 360 late fall next year and eventually for the PS3. For the demo, none of the graphics were pre-rendered, meaning what you see is what you really get. For game play, Jackie controls two viper-like darklings and still holds two pistols. At times, when Jackie needs to get through a tight crack, you can switch to “viper-view” and extend the darkling through vents and flank the cops on the other side of the wall. The vipers also have their own powers, they’re able to open a warp in space and pull enemies in and throw them out. Jackie also has the help of other darklings. These darklings spawn by themselves in the darkness and each carry a different arsenal of weapons. One darkling we saw killed a cop with a cement drill. While multiplayer features are still in development, players will be able to play as darklings against each other.

Compared to the comic, Jackie isn’t wearing his usual darkness armor. Because there would’ve been too much going on the screen, Marc thought why not just give Jackie his original costume, the trench coat. With Jackie’s badass darkness looks teamed up with his darkness powers, how far will you go in his world?
I read the first ten issues of The Darkness when they came out, and I have nothing but fond memories of the comic. When I heard last year that The Darkness was being developed for the 360 I was curious, but not too excited. After hearing Starbreeze is involved my interest shot way up. I just hope this game comes out. For some reason I seem to remember the release date being much earlier and then it turned into a TBA. Now I hear conflicting dates in 2007. We all know how unreliable announced release dates are, but sometimes I foolishly believe them.
Still want to know if the author had any substance
to back that sentence.
If “The Darkness” is a sucess, It would be great to see a “Witchblade” and “The Angelus” game come out later, since the comic stories are all interrelated.
