One Piece: Pirate’s Carnival

Ahoy Mates! The Straw Hat Crew is back again for more mischief and mayhem.  This time Luffy, Nami, Zolo and the rest of the gang are going head to head in board-game style battle to win the most berries.

One Piece: Pirate’s Carnival is a Mario Party style multiplayer game where players vie for panels on a game board.  Players take turns picking panels on a grid and each panel is a card with a One Piece character on it.  Once a panel is selected, a challenge is issued depending on the type of card uncovered.  The winner of the game gains control of that panel, which amounts to more points at the end of the game.  The card types are Mini-game Cards, Captain Cards and Event Cards.

Mini-game cards are simple.  The player whom chose the panel selects from a list of 3 mini-games.  These games are played in a free-for-all style.  Players are given an objective to complete and sometimes try to prevent others from reaching the goal.  Some games are a race against your opponents, like “Where Is Panda Man?”  The goal is to find Panda Man hiding in a crowded scene.  The first one to find him wins and gets the panel!

When a player uncovers a Captain Panel they are assigned as the captain for the game.  Drawing a Captain panel starts a 3 on 1 battle against the Captain.  In the “Saw Tooth” Arlong game, each player controls a sight aiming darts at a board.  Arlong (the Captain) shoots darts to steal points from other players.  The one with the most points at the end get the panel.

Event Cards do not initiate a game, but rather direct control of panels on the board as well as a gain or loss of berries.  A couple of examples of event cards are Lapin, who allows a player to protect a chosen panel from being stolen, and Mihawk, which allows a player to destroy a panel belonging to a rival.

To get the most out of One Piece: Pirate’s Carnival the board game should be played with other people.  But as we all know, other people are not always available to play games, and for this there is a CPU controlled player option.  Pirate’s Carnival supports up to 4 players, so break out that multitap. The game begins with choosing your character from the Straw Hat Crew.  It does not matter who you pick however, all the characters play the same.

Version Covered: North America

Release Date: 09.12.06

+ Pros: Multiplayer, good to have on in the background at parties and such. Overall a good board system, does not force players to progress down a linear path.

- Cons:  There are not enough games and models are taken from previous games (See Grand Adventure) and are small with simple animations. Also the mini-games as well as the general concept have been done before.

Overall: Pirate’s Carnival is not up to the standard set by previous One Piece titles.  The name “One Piece” could be swapped out and nothing would be gained or lost.

u know, i never really thought about it, but you’re right. they took the time to make a big machine for tiny disc, i doesn’t make since, unless they couldn’t make a system small enough for the discs.
