Video Game Movie Madness (Lost Planet contest)

By Spencer . January 14, 2007 . 3:32pm

Ever since Resident Evil was a success (moderate success?) Capcom has jumped on the movie bandwagon. They announced that a Devil May Cry and Onimusha movie are in the works. Are these movies going to be any good? Would a Dead Rising or Mega Man movie be better? What movies based off of video games would you pay to go see? Post here and we’ll pick out a winner on Tuesday night, Jan. 16, 2007.

At first, I was gonna make fun of this question because movie based on games are POS 95% of the time, but then again, most of these were based on action, platform, fighting and survival games. Perhaps something like an fully Animated (Japanese animated of course) Gyakuten Saiban movie would be make something interesting, just watching this was a blast:

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6cQH3qk40s

I would picture a trilling court drama anime movie with suspense and humor.
  • KageNaruto
I'd probably want dark cloud and tales of symphonia as movies, due to their awsome story lines and of course the different worlds and creatures. Tales of Symphonia would be my first choice, since not only does it have a cool story, an awsome world and awsome monsters, but also great characters and good character development.

They're not going to be any good because games are meant to be played, not watched. Doesn't matter what the movie is based on. Additionally, they almost always go with these mediocre directors. The Resident Evil movie had a chance to be good -- they had George Romero write a script, and, as most people know, he is the father of the [flesh eating] zombie genre, but Capcom decided it wasn't good enough, and went with Anderson's script. It's too bad Anderson's script was really bad.

Also, anime isn't all that good. More often than not, it's full of clichés you see in every anime, so I wouldn't even support that -- it sure as hell isn't going to reach as wide an audience as a live action movie would, therefore, I disagree with the above.

I think a Suikoden movie would be cool. Actually, scratch that, I think it would be awful just like every other video game movie. An anime series would be a much better choice. However, I still think Bruce Campbell would be the perfect person to play Viktor.
  • Pichi
Xenosaga series is just screaming for a movie! For crying out loud, its basically an interactive movie! With cutscenes THAT long, you might as well make them all together into a next Star Wars like trilogy and beyond! Xenosaga would fit right in for a movie.
  • RealRyudo
I really think that Dead Rising, in good hands, would make a great movie, but the similarities with Dawn of the Dead would play against it. Another movie I would love to see would be a Shenmue, at least with the end of the story with the graphics of the game (like they did with the movie of the first game!).

Being more realistic, I hope the new Street Fighter movie will be great, and maybe Devil May Cry. A new Resident Evil saga with Albert Wesker would be really cool too!
  • vysethebold
I think they should make a movie based on Street Fighter: The Movie for the Saturn just so they can finally have a movie based on a game that was based on a movie that was based on a game.
  • I think we're all in agreement here that a Megaman movie would most likely be terrible. The games situations don't really lend themselves to movies especially with all the power collecting.

Ominisha and Devil May Cry will probably turn out like Bloodrayne less Uwe Boll. Essentially this is due to the temptation to just have the main characters enage themselves in pointless and uninteresting battles. Dante is cool because you control a movie character if you couldn't control him it'd just be a plain old movie with mediocre CGI.

Dead Rising has a movie and we all know it, Dawn of the Dead, heck the movie even has psychopaths who ride into the mall. Though if a movie was made I'm sure everyone would see it ONLY if Otis featured in it, being torn to pieces by the merciful undead.

Two games that deserve movies (which aren't RPGs) are Legacy of Kain and Advent Rising. One having Vampires and time travel always a winning combination. And the other Having telepathic abilties and the genocide of the entire human race also it has Ethan who has some of the best dialgue ever in a video game.
  • The Megaman movie must be made in CG, because human actor will never capture the real deal of the frachise, and about Onimusa and Devil May Cry has little chance to be good, the only way is to stay truly linked with the games plots and of course use great actors and not rush to release the movie.
Dead Rise was also little chance beacause the zombi type of movie is old news but who know some great genius can make this movie be better than the others.
They should make a movie of the Shining Force series not the new one but the genesis and saturn versions, great games with great plots and has a huge possibilitis of adaptations.

But don´t get your expectations up too highly movies made from games has a few " blockbusters´hits", this new projects may follow the same way.
  • Kakashi
I think Yakuza and/or Shenmue would make awesome movies, and most likely have a fighting chance of succeeding, at least in HK and Japan.
My funny pick for the US market would be a Metal Slug movie, with "fill in your favorite comedy" actor/actress.

I think a lot of games could be made into great movies. One I really hope gets off the ground is Halo though. It could be a Saving Private Ryan/Star Wars combo with a little RoboCop thrown in. Awesome action movie. Many others too, they just need to start getting talented people to work on them instead of whatever hack they can find who is willing to buy the rights to the property. I think anime versions are a great idea, I don't care if they won't reach as wide of an audience and they aren't anymore cliched than live action, I think Cherry is just an anime hater.

As for bad ideas for game movies, I think something like Guitar Hero or DDR would be a bad idea. The best option is probably to leave them in their game state, they will always be best that way.

P.S. I would mind seeing a GTA movie, if it has lots of violence and a good plot I'm there.
  • Ruroni Otaku
Metroid Prime could be a good try as a movie, between Aliens and Starship Trooper kinda... With some CGI animation as when Samus turns into a her rolling state. Besides that, I agree that Guitar Hero and DDR should stay games.

A few years ago, Ubisoft came out with a remarkable sleeper-hit entitled Beyond Good and Evil. The narrative of the game was entirely engrossing and genuinely plausible for a fantasy-like adventure movie. The story revolved around a reporter named Jade who was out to expose a sinister conspiracy. The game’s locales were exotic and appealing, while the characters were memorable for their comic subtleties. Given proper casting, a game such as this could easily make the transition from the video game scene to Hollywood. The film would have to depend upon CG, but in the spirit of LOTR or more recently Pan’s Labyrinth, the game might just work. I know that many people fancy games such as Resident Evil or Doom, but quite frankly, their stories are a bit linear and not innately suited for a film adaptation. Moreover, narratives are usually butchered by people that try to make a film appealing to a larger audience (Film versions of games should prioritize the concerns of gamers first and foremost). Additionally, directors are generally second-rate and studios are almost always not willing to take a gamble on new talent. For this reason, if a studio is going to make a film about a game, they should seriously remain loyal to their fans and not deliver a product of mediocre quality. If simple details such as these were satisfied, then I would not have any qualms about paying to go see such a movie.

    Katamari Damacy!
  • A Boy and His Blob would make a great movie. Two thumbs up right there.
  • Veilknight
Stick with what's already been successful in the past. I know there's the new Street Fighter Alpha: Generations movie, but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a Street Fighter anime movie directed by Gisaburo Sugii (of Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie and Street Fighter II V fame).

Both his movie and anime adaptions of the SF II series captured the atmosphere of the games perfectly. With some of the best choreographed fights animated (even to this day), likable characters, cameos and references to the games that is filled with plenty of fanservice, and an easy to follow storyline that everyone can enjoy there's no wonder this turned out to be a hit and one of the few examples of a videogame to anime/movie transition done right.

It doesn't matter whether you're a fan of the series or not, there's really something for everyone here, as it appeals to anyone who likes a good action movie as well as the fans. When all these things come together, you have a hit.

ironically, I think lost planet would have the best potential for a movie, at least from what I've seen so far. the story is reasonably believable (colonizing a planet in the future, and harvesting thermal energy from its inhabitants to survive), and the snow-covered environment wouldn't be so cost-prohibitive as other, more far-fetched movies (katamari damacy? seriously?) might be - use of cgi would be limited to just the creatures, like in "starship troopers".

but if we're going for what I'd like to see (realistic or not), it'd have to be killer 7.

I've always said that I would pay to see a Metal Gear Soild movie if it's done correctly. Another game that would make a good movie would be something from the Clock Tower games.
  • RC
Final Fantasy VI. it was a pretty epic game that'd make a cool movie if it was pulled off right. problem is... i doubt it can be pulled off right.
  • sakura
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Zelda! I think it would be an awesome movie, as long as it's not based on the CD-i version.
  • GamerChick82
I think Phantasy Star would make an excellent movie, with it's complex storyline and exciting fights.
  • I would love to see a movie that centered around ToeJam and Earl...

Although CG movies tend to forget about story, I'd love to see Panzer Dragoon Orta made into a movie. Jet Set Radio could be sort of like Hackers. Are they thinking about doing a Lego Star Wars (I would assume straight-to-DVD) movie? If it's not purely hack'n'slash, I think that Ninja Gaiden would have a lot of potential.
Although, I think that there are bigger chances of Britney's Dance Beat - The Movie than these ideas. Many great ideas from the above posters.
  • Castlevania has great potential to be a movie.
  • Andreas
One game that I think would do well being made into a movie might be Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. It probably couldn't be an exact adaption from the game, but I could see this being pulled off well nonetheless. Not that I'm a fan of fangoria, but I thought Underworld, Blade, Spawn (I could name more) were really good movies, for the theme anyways.

And besides, who doesn't like a nice revenge flick?

I'd personally enjoy seeing a Command & Conquer movie. I've always wanted to see one especially given their live-action movies they had for their cut-scenes. It seemed very fitting to have it all culminate into an actual movie one day. Just imagine a traditional Hollywood war flick, except based around Command & Conquer. It'd probably bomb at the box office but I know that I'd definitely go and see it.
  • Sey
I'd like to see the Prince of Persia made into a movie trilogy. The fight scenes & special fx are almost guaranteed to be incredible. As for the story, as long as it sticks w/the games' script w/a few addition, and a few decent actors, I'd be a happy fan....

CGI Conker's Bad Fur Day as Runner-Up
  • When converting any media into a movie, you need a good, short storyline that's entertaining. I think most game storylines aren't destined for movies -- almost every game is too long to fit everything in, so you have to cut-out things, which often alienates the core fans. That said, it seems best to find an IP that originates in gaming and then create a new adventure in that world.

I think an Elder Scrolls movie could do well -- it has such a huge amount of background information that it wouldn't be difficult to create a new story in the world that sticks to canon. Add onto that the fact that the games lend themselves to such open-ended exploring, a more "directed" movie approach could be a refreshing exposure to the world. The downside is that the story arcs are usually so epic that it could be too large for a single movie -- but, hey, every movie company I know loves to squeeze franchises dry, so I'm sure they'd have no problem making multiples if they were successful.

Someone else mentioned Dead Rising -- that seems like another that could be a big cult hit, and probably the one I'd like to see the most, if for no other reason that movies with zombie killing are just fun.

A slick, rotoscoped version of Suda51's Killer7 would be amazing.

Just think about it: blood, guns, art, political conflict, and multiple personality disorder?

    Oh hell yes.
  • I'd love to see Final Fantasy Tactics turned into a movie, personally. I just loved the story so much.

Otherwise, Onimusha is going to be a pretty bad movie from my guess, and Devil May Cry is going to turn into something really corporate, and it'll feature really generic MTV punk and metal, so it'll make all gamers want to claw their eyes out.
  • linkdude
Zelda can be a great movie, especially in a CG style similar to Final Fantasy: Advent Children. It can be an original story line with Link actually grown up with those 7 years in the Ocarina time line taking place in a neighboring city to Hyrule with an arch villain that makes Ganon look weak. Including this can be new races related to known ones and also maybe a cool now helper than can actually fight along with Link that the fanbase can like instead of the usual small helper or fairy.
  • Aoshi00
I would really like to see Xenosaga be made into a movie, usually Hollywood is pretty good w/ sci-fi flicks, not sure if the religious stuff works, but the sci-fi/alien feel in Ep1 definitely fits the bill.
  • BlueBomber97
Whoever said a Mega man movie would be terrible is either off his rocker or has never played the Megaman X series. There's an awesome story behind the Megaman X games, at least there is up until the end of Megaman X4. Topics like worldwide warfare, whether or not peace can truly be gained from fighting a war, the distinction between good and evil - All of these are present in Megaman X and more - not to mention that we all would love nothing more than to see badass fight scene after badass fight scene, with Zero slashing Mechaniloids to ribbons, and X blasting the arms off of Mavericks, and the final battle with Sigma at the end. I agree, though, Megaman X would be horrible live-action. It would require a director to take the anime, or even Advent Children-esque CGI route to be good.
