Nintendo announced Japan’s Virtual Console line up for this week and it’s a light years ahead of last weeks release which only had Alien Crush. Popo and Nana make their Wii debut in the Virtual Console version of Ice Climbers. The game is sold for 500 points and this is going to be the Japanese release, which has some differences from the North American release. For instance there isn’t an abominal snowman, instead there are seals. And yes you can club a seal in the Japanese game. Ikki, a top down perspective ninja game, is the other NES release this week. Moto Roader, a multiplayer racing game from the PC-Engine / TurboGrafx-16 line up is sold for 600 points. Contra Spirits (Contra III: The Alien Wars) is probably the big name release this week. Contra III had missions where you could hang on the back of a helicopter and two mode 7 levels. It’s being sold for 800 points and since Japan is getting it this week a US release can’t be far behind.
Famicom / NES
Ikki - 500
Ice Climbers - 500
Super Famicom / Super Nintendo
Contra Spirits (Contra III: The Alien Wars) - 800
PC Engine / TurboGrafix-16
Moto Roader – 600
I don’t think this means the US will be getting Contra any time soon. Japan already has Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and a bunch of other awesome titles that haven’t hit the US yet.
Really makes you get the feeling that Nintendo is holding out on us. I know they’re most likely trying to release a few obscure titles before porting some of the more coveted titles but that doesn’t mean skipping out on the more popular franchises, especially when you can already purchase them in Japan.
