It’s been taunting us since the Wii first launched, sitting there on the menu mocking us, telling us that at some point we’d be able to read the news on the WIi. Well, that day is here! So far the Wii isn’t prompting you to update, but if you tell it to look for updates it’ll download it.

It works a lot like the forcast channel, spinning the globe around to find the news stories is a really cool feature, though it remains to be seen if it’s really the best way to surf for news. There is however a neat slideshow feature that’ll browse the globe at random, and show you headlines and pictures from around the world. Nintendo signed a deal with the Associated Press to provide content, so moving forward it’ll be interesting to see the news channel develop. More pics after the jump!

the news channel is great. it’s much more useful than the forecast channel (and also has a globe which can tilt in two directions instead of just one.) and it’s much less frustrating than the opera beta. whereas opera is very sluggish, the news channel is downright fast. there are lots of stories and they are very easy to read. the photos are a very nice qualty as well. i read that AP wants to also provide multimedia content eventually.

when you download the update for the news channel, you’ll notice that other things have been upgraded as well. the globe on the weather channel looks a bit better, and there’s now a larger variety of graphics for different weather conditions. various clouds and different colored suns, etc.

if you notice any other upgrades, let me know! looks like they didn’t upgrade the mii channel, even though it could use it. it would be nice if they upped the friend count for the address book and also the mii plaza. and it would be fun to see news sets of mii graphical options added in each update of the system software.
