Re-localizing Chrono Trigger

Re localizing Chrono TriggerWas the Chrono Trigger translation that bad? Some of the items were renamed (tonic instead of potion) and techniques were squeezed together to fit text spacing limits, but it wasn’t awful. DarknessSavior aims to clean up differences with a Chrono Trigger patch that has the original item names and fixes any censorship issues in the game. Work on the patch is just beginning, but the screenshot gives an idea about the direction that DarknessSavior is going in. What do you think of “Wind Cut” instead of “Slash” and “Revolver” instead of “Cyclone”?

I think that if I didn’t have a million other games to play and wanted to take Crono Trigger for a spin, I’d choose this version if it were available. However, I don’t judge the quality of a game based on semantics. “Revolver” instead of “Cyclone”… Hey, they do the same thing, right? Still, I know how rabid some people are for this game, so I’m sure this is a dream come true for them.

I agree. This game has a huge fanbase and think many people will be happy. Personaly, I feel that it doesn’t add a whole lot to the game.Still nice work!

This is hardly newsworthy. Furthermore, if this guy wants attention, he should go out and actually translate a game that needs translating, rather than just screwing around with the names in Chrono Trigger, which is hardly a big deal. Seems the amount of purists on the internet who want their games to be exactly like the Japanese version are getting out of hand.

What a waste of time. Maybe they should concentrate on a game that actually had a…you know…bad translation. Or maybe just work on something else that never got an English release.

Actually, the idea behind this project was to get someone interested in translating the game. The names that I changed (for example “Revolver”) were only made that way because of space limitations. The actual original name is “Kaiten-giri” which translates to “Revolving Attack”, and since the character limit would not allow that, I had to settle for “Revolver”. Same for “Wind Cut”, the translation for the original name would be “Whirlwind Cut”. I cut it down because of space limitations.

However, I found a great translator, and when the project gets finished it will have MUCH more than the screenshots I made showed. The character limits will be much bigger, everything will be retranslated from the ground up, and much more. You might also notice that I did the hack in question using the US game as a base, the finished project will be using the Japanese game.

Also, I never said CT’s translation was “awful”. However, I do know that many parts of the script were changed (Crono’s mother actually had a NAME, Magus was known as the “Demon King”, etc…), and that Woosley himself admitted that during translation he had to take out large pieces of various conversations. This is what I am trying to fix by re-translating the game.

Thanks for the comments though, I’m glad that there are people out there who notice these types of things. ^_^
