FFXIII exclusivity is under discussion

After the out of left field news that was DMC4 going multiplatform, many people have began to assume that both MGS4 and FFXIII would be the next two major titles to jump ship. While Kojima has adamantanly made it known that he doesn’t really favor multiplatforming [MGS4], there hasn’t been much discussion about Square-Enix porting FFXIII/Versus XIII to the 360. That is, of course, until today.

N4G.com posted an interview translated from the French site DNR where President of SCE France George Fornay said

"The development cost of the plays exploded, it becomes difficult to have exclusivenesses, except our own plays. But we will have as of launching 30 plays, of which Motorstorm, Resistance or Virtua Fighter. Moreover, we await 200 plays from here the end of 2007. Lastly, for Final Fantasy XIII, I can say to you that exclusiveness is under discussion."

Keyphrase: the bolded part.

Could it be that Square-Enix has finally seen how much of a profit Capcom has made with taking risks with Dead Rising and Lost Planet and wants to jump in at the chance, too, or is it something else? Regardless, Sony is serious about keeping Final Fantasy XIII as a major flagship title for the PS3. Anything can happen.

What say you?

PS3 only exclusive for the Japanese market.
PS3 and 360 for the US market.
Not sure for Europe and other PAL regions.

Aoshi00 Says:

There’s really no telling, FF 1-6 was on Nintendo and it jumped to Sony’s PSX, and it took forover for Square & Nintedo to make up.

I’m sure Microsoft is glad Mistwalker is under them, w/ the 360 having at least exclusives like Blue Dragon, Loss Odyssey, and Cry.

I don’t mind FF staying PS3 exclusive. If FF 13 is indeed going multi, Sony would be in big trouble since that’s their system seller along w/ the much anticipated MGS 4, DMC 4, etc. What peeves me is that after I bought one version and then it’s ported to another system w/ “extras” like the director’s cuts, then that makes you own the inferior version.

Zoglog Says:

I think Kojima has a point in wanting to keep development on a single platform (especially one as unique as the PS3). We all saw the Xbox version of MGS2 Subsistence take a performance hit and when you have to develop for multiple consoles, it’s inevitable that production resources will have to be funneled to ensure compatibility.

Granted it’s not to say that multi platform games can’t succeed, it just takes more effort in an already daunting industry. I think Square Enix will probably prefer to make splinters of games, rather than make them multiport as they’ve done recently so.

rootbeerking Says:

I’m no longer the FF fan I once was but I’d love the series to go multiplatform. For if anything that means more jRPGs on the 360. I’ve yet choosen which of the two systems(PS3 or 360) I want to spend my hard earned cash on, and the one with the more jRPGs(currently 360 is in the lead with Blue Dragon and Trusty Bell) will determine what I buy.

How was Dead Rising and Lost Planet taking risks? Those products were heavily subsidized by Microsoft. Also, it was a Resident Evil and a Shooter. With Americanized art. Inafune is not one to take any risks. Purely an analytical game designer–nothing against him, that just makes him competent and not great.

Miyamoto, Will Wright, Oendan, Level 5, Jaffe to a certain extent(who would have thought minigame boss-events would be so popular?), they take risks.

Inafune’s just a normal guy.

Roli O. Says:

@ rdun

Ask Capcom, specifically Inafune. They’ve said it various times that Dead Rising and Lost Planet were risks that they weren’t sure they were willing to take. Here’s a link for you.

rdun Says:

I’ve read it before, every designer claims their taking risks. Everything has a small measure of financial risk. But as far as game design goes, those games are nothing but going back to the well on another Platform.

It’s like the Wii and Red Steel. I wasn’t surprised that Red Steel did so well because that’s what that console was missing. If a Gears of War clone came out for the Wii, that’ll still do well. Is it really a risk?

Spore is a risk. Mario Galaxy is a risk.

Just cuz Capcom has been hurt by Clover studio and are twice shy about ANY KIND OF RISK doesnt mean that Dead Rising or Lost Planet was any kind of risky endeavor. With the kind of deal MS gave them? With the proven propensity of 360 owners to shooter games? Dead Rising was just another way to get Resident Evil on the 360 without breaking existing RE5 contracts.

Very simple.

delriego Says:

Final Fantasy is the only Sony exclusive I want, they can keep their MGS for all I care, but the day I hear FF is coming to the 360 I will crap my pants and be very very happy.

Angelous Says:

It’s time for Square-Enix to make more money. Bring on the multiplatform Final Fantasy! Final Fantasy XII with achievements? Yes please!

Kurt Says:

Yeah, games starring Mario surely don’t sell at all. I applaud your bravery, Nintendo!

Pesmerga00 Says:

I really, really hope this will turn out to be true. I am just now on the verge of buying a 360, but this would make it definite. Keep the rpgs coming.

Danny Choo Says:

I’m a PS3 owner and thought “poor sony” when I heard the news that DMC was jumping ship.
Has MGS4 jumped ship yet?

BurntToast256 Says:

Mario Galaxy is a risk?

That was me falling out of my chair in laughter.

Spencer Says:

Kurt - your comment made me laugh so much. :)

Roli O. Says:

@ Danny Choo

No, sadly, MGS4 hasn’t jumped ship. When it does, I’m sure the Internets will explode.

Veilknight Says:

Konami will probably port the expansion of MGS4 (you know its coming) to the 360 sometime after the game launches on the PS3, not too similar to what went down with Substance on Xbox.

That is, if it ever were to happen in the first place. I’d imagine a year after, possibly as a way to not steal thunder from the PS3. Just as long if they don’t screw it up.

brningstar4 Says:

I believe right now that there is about a 60% chance that FFXIII will go multiplatform. Squeenix knows to go with the money. They first started when FFXII: Revenant Wings was announced for the DS and not the PSP. There is a reason behind it. The 360 also won’t get any spinoffs unless it gets the original. The only reason the DS got RW and PSP didn’t is because the DS is the single most popular console in history.ever.period. Much more accessable and it has a much larger marketshare than the psp. That being said, I believe that Squeenix will go multiplatform, combined the number of 360’s sold worldwide is much, much greater than the number of ps3’s sold worldwide. The only PSP ‘exclusive’ titles are remakes of FFI, FFII, FFT, and a FFVII spinoff. Also, Blue Dragon went multi-disk, there is no reason FFXIII won’t, and if that drives up costs, so be it, I’d rather pay $69.99 then $660 for FFXIII. Also, if it is released on both consoles, the 360 is the way to go- as it will have achievements.

Jay C Says:

As much as i luv 360, which soon will be in my hands, i disagree of the fact FFXIII goes multi. Now as for a year after then it wouldn’t matter cuz i would beat it by then on the ps3. And it was mainly the reason for gettin one. but if it doesn’t stay an exclusive I would just get the ps3 and not buy the game. Cuz it wouldn’t be right when developers say that it’s better to go multi-platform because they want everyone to experience a game of theirs, and this is real talk, they say that comin from sony. Not once have you heard a 360 developer say that cuz they don’t have to. They know anything on the 360 will sale which main leaves every game on the ps3 multi and leave 360 with multi and exclusives. If you started off on a console and you feel that you’re headed up another direction let’em kno yet everybody just waits until it’s about that time for a console to shine and yea, we’re going multi at the last minute sorry to bring it to you like this, but no hard feeling, and no one believes sony shouldn’t get mad when they should. And square-enix would be really bogus to sit there and do that. Maybe I just went too far cuz in the end would still buy the game but i just wouldn’t want play it in guilt.
