Target getting in the pre owned console biz?

IceAmp sent over an interesting tip with a link to Target’s unannounced pre-owned video game console section. Currently Target is selling used PS2s and Xboxes for $109.99 while Gamecubes are $64.99. You can only purchase the consoles online, but you can return them in stores. If you poke around Target’s site a little more you can see that they are selling used iPods too. Considering how lucrative it is to sell pre-owned products, it’s not a surprise, but where is Target getting these used consoles from? Are they refurbished units or is Target secretly buying them somewhere?

If you right click on the images and choose the Copy Link Location (Firefox) option and paste that into your address bar, you’ll get an Amazon domain location.

In fact, you can seemingly do this for any image on Target’s online shopping site and it’ll link to an image on Amazon’s servers. Perhaps Amazon and Target have a partnership that now allows Target to act as a middle man for used console sales (something that Amazon already provides…)?

Amazon runs the front end of Target’s website, similar to the deal Amazon used to have with Toys R US. There’s alot of things on Target’s website that are not sold in their stores (such as 750 pound, $6000 stand up arcade units) so I would look at this as simply some cross marketing with another online player that would give Target a commission on any sales. I can’t see this making it into their stores, given the already fairly tight shelf space for video games hardware…but online, that limitiation doesn’t exist, so why not put it up and see if they get any sales.
