After seeing that Tumiki Fighters appeared on Gamefly’s listings with Majesco as the publisher I poked around a little and saw a listing for Kengo Zero. Genki who developed the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series is behind the Kengo series and it looks like a mix between Bushido Blade and Dynasty Warriors. Kengo Zero was released last year in Japan and if the listing is correct Kengo Zero may appear in North America later this year. Majesco found success by taking a chance with Cooking Mama. Perhaps after taking a stab with that series they’re getting more daring with the titles they choose to bring to North America.
By someone who has always been a big fan of the Bushido Blade series, I have always HATED the Kengo series. The Kengo series at first followed the storyline featured in the Bushido Blade series, but it supplied lackluster gameplay and the dumbest combat system known to man… 3 games later and the series still sucks… Personally, I’m not looking forward to this.
So it’s not that hot then? That’s rather disappointing, being a big fan of the Bushido Blade series myself on the PSone I’ve been craving for a game with a similar style and nature for years (wouldn’t have minded Square-Enix pulling off a next-gen sequel either). I’ll probably end up renting Kengo Zero to see everything this title has to offer, but with low expectations.
Well Bushido Blade functions on the “critical hit” system, where a single hit can kill an opponent. You can also neutralize a players movement ability by slashing at their legs, forcing them to drag along. Even more you can slash their arms to take their offensive abilities away. Bushido Blade also worked on a “counter-attack” system where you riposte and parry while working on center of gravity balancing… However, the KENGO series features none of this. Its a bad samurai game with health bars rather than critical hits, it has very few movements and very few weapons. Combine that with being slow and unbalanced, making it even worse.

What I find ironic is that while the 360 may be flopping currently in Japan, it probably has the most imports out of all 3 next-gen consoles that actually interest me at this point.
Kengo Zero looks like another interesting game, I’ll definitely keep my eye on this one.
