LegaiaRules sends us word with more evidence that Front Mission 1st is coming to North America. The official Front Mission Blog posted an English screenshot of Front Mission 1st that uses a different font than the Japanese game. Also Gamestop is starting to take pre-orders for the title. Square-Enix USA has yet to announce the title, but considering the popularity of the Nintendo DS it seems likely they are going to bring it out. If it comes out this will be the first time North America will see the original Front Mission.
Thanks for all of the tips about the possible revival of Front Mission!
From the RPGamer interview:
“(Reader Question) Ok, on to localization. Any plans to bring over Front Mission 5?
Charlie: No. We have no plans for that title.
What about Front Mission 1st for the DS?
Charlie: We have not made any announcements yet regarding Front Mission 1st for North America.”
so that’s neither a yes or a no. The one on PS2 is a definite no however.
It’s pretty much a yes for Front Mission 1st DS. Front Mission Project Blog is maintained directly by Product Development 6, otherwise known as the Front Mission development team. Series creator and visionary Toshiro Tsuchida has his own section there and he was the one behind the original confirmation on a blog dated April 20, 2007. Square Enix USA likely doesn’t know about this since Square Enix Japan hasn’t said any word about it. If they do, it’s definitely under the wraps until E3 most likely.
Either way, the man who practically knows Front Mission inside and out, as well as the provided translated picture and Gamestop page, have a lot more value and credibility than a staff who may not know unless the main branch in Japan tells them. They also gave the heads-up on Front Mission 5 details months before it was officially announced for release at TGS, including pictures and data on the new changes. If that’s not credible enough, then I don’t know what is.
btw, jeffx, that interview answer was corrected recently. The corrected answer falls along the lines of “We have no plans currently to announce FM 1st’s release.” It would appear that someone from their North American branch got word from the main branch or a poster delivered the aforementioned information that came directly from FMPB.
And thanks for posting the information, Siliconera!
The following link is Toshiro Tsuchida’s own personal confirmation on Front Mission Project Blog. Took a while since he loves blogging apparently, but here it is:
http://frontmissionproject.cocolog-nifty.com/fmpb/2007/04/post_ca8d.html
Here’s what it translates to(I’ll translate it into readable English):
“The North American Edition
Although it has not been advertised yet, I will do it here. Though it has not been written or stated, we are making changes to the North American edition of 1st(Front Mission 1st). Yes, it is undergoing the localization process.
FIGHT -> MELEE
AGILITY -> DODGE
We originally made some mistakes so there will be modifications made, such as the circumstances of window size.
Also, in regards to parameter indication, changes will be made such as the inclusion of pictures. When it is out in English, there will be times that the game may be difficult to understand, but one does not have to read the manual with the North American one. We feel it is easier to understand using pictures and it will be understood intuitively.
When we have prepared pictures of the North American version, one of the developers will publish it.”
The changes dated above are in regards to changing parameters to “fit” in with familiar Front Mission North American localizations, such as MELEE or DODGE.
haha, legaiarules!! i know you from the Front Mission 5 board on Gamefaqs. What’s up G?
