Super Smash Brothers Brawl is going to give players a choice on what controller they feel suits the game the best. Purists can opt for the Gamecube controller or the classic controller and if you want a new experience you can try the remote/nunchuck combination. Out of the four options Masahiro Sakurai, the developer of Super Smash Brothers Brawl, prefers the Gamecube controller.
I suppose I would recommend the Nintendo GameCube controller, though. I like the feel of that powerful rumble.
After playing a handful of fighting games on the Wii, I tend to like the Gamecube controller over using motion control too, but not for the rumble. Shaking the nunchuck to do an air dash doesn’t feel accurate in Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and shaking the remote to punch in Naruto Shippuden: Geiktou Ninja Taisen EX is just another form of button mashing. The only fighting game so far that has done an excellent job at using motion control is Bleach Wii, which responds to three simple slashes.

Four different controller schemes gives us four different ways to play Brawl. Smart move on Nintendo’s part, there’s no better way to please all gamers otherwise by opening up different ways to immense yourself into the game. The potential this offers is limitless, imagine mastering a character like all-time badass Solid Snake with the Gamecube controller, while following it up by repeating the same process all over again but by using the Classic Controller. Essentially, you’re presented with more than one way to perfectly refine your skills with Snake, depending on which set-up suits your flavor.
I can just imagine the infinite replay value SSBB could offer up as a whole, more so than any fighting game before it. More than likely, I’ll probably go for the Gamecube and Classic Controller set-up, as I figure playing any fighter in general will always feel more natural using the aforementioned scheme.
Yeah, the classic controller is good, but it’s a pain to have the remote to sit on your lap when connected. I would probably use the wavebird, too bad there’s no rumble.

I think I’ll go with the Classic Controller. If Nintendo could redesign the Classic Controller to me independent of the Wii Remote and include rumble, I would proclaim it to be the best Nintendo controller EVER.
By the way, Sakurai-son’s line “I like the feel of that powerful rumble” is cracking me up! That hilarious!
