Dai Senryaku Exceed coming to North America?

daiexceed.jpgYou’re probably thinking what in the world is Dai Senryaku Exceed? I’m not really sure either, but I’m guessing that it is the localized version Dai Senryaku VII Exceed a strategy game from SystemSoft. I’ve seen the Dai Senryaku series before when Kemco brought Dai Senryaku VII: Modern Military Tactics to the Xbox, but it looked way too complex to step into. From the screenshots it looks like it is a mixture of Risk and Advance Wars, so if you’re into turn based strategy games this might appeal to you.

I’m more curious why it is coming to North America. The Xbox game came and went with little notice and it is so late in the Playstation 2’s life cycle that I doubt anyone will give this attention if the Gamefly listing is real. Also Valcon Games is listed as the publisher, the same company who brought over atrocities like Pirates: Legend of the Black Buccaneer. Dai Senryaku is a niche title and maybe, just maybe Valcon is switching gears into becoming a niche publisher instead of shoveling derivative games like Corvette on the market.

If this got translated to english I would buy it in a heartbeat for the psp, I loved the xbox version of this.
  • It did come over via PS2 and I just bought it. It's exactly my type of game. I agree with an earlier poster, though, it should come to PSP. Handhelds are a perfect platform for this type of game.

Like Advance Wars? At the most basic level (military units, turn based) but that is where the similarities end. Daisenryaku has hundreds of real-world units spread across 8 nationalities. The game is played on a hexagonal grid rather than a square one. There is no simple "rock-paper-scissors" algorithm like you find in Advance Wars, it is much more complex and requires a lot of thought.

One of the topics on the Kemco boards for the XBox version covered "how to deal with assault helicopters" and it ended up being 43 posts long with each post detailing a different strategy. You'll find no such depth in Advance Wars (though I'm not knocking that game).

If you want Daisenryaku on a handheld then there are Japanese versions of Daisenryaku DS (middle east theater), Daisenryaku Portable (far east theater) and Daisenryaku Portable 2 (middle east, again). They are very playable without knowledge of Japanese though they are in that language. I have faqs for the PSP versions and can help on any of them, I monitor their boards at gamefaqs.com.

Iron Storm for the Sega Saturn is also a game in this series and it gets nothing but kudos. It's still known as one of the best Saturn titles out there amongst strategy game lovers. The following for the series is indeed VERY loyal, I still get emails about the XBox version and my FAQ for it gets tons of hits even today.

If you want more info on Exceed (or any other Daisenryaku, for that matter) please head over to Gamefaqs. I'll be happy to answer any questions you post on the boards (Daisenryaku MMT, Daisenryaku Exceed, Daisenryaku Portable, Daisenryaku DS) plus you can get info from the FAQs.

As one who is keenly aware of this game's following I take exception to Spencer's ignorance as to the game's audience. Both Valcon and Crave have been listed as publishers (depending on which site you read) so who knows what the quality of the final translation will be like but it hardly matters because the game is in the play anyway and Daisenryaku plays *great.*

I would rather see a DS or PSP version, though, the gameplay is more suited for handhelds, IMHO.

It might very well be a mistake, but the Xbox version had a very loyal following. It's actually nothing like Risk, it's simply like Advance Wars, only with real units instead of cartoony ones. But gameplay is pretty much identical. I can definitely see someone bringing it over. And I think you are counting the PS2 dead much too soon. It will likely have games coming out for it for years, and something like this would be worth it even for those with PS3s, thanks to the backwards compatiblity.

There must be some sort of mistake.
