80GB PS3 out today, get your 60GB Playstation 3 before they vanish

80gbps3.jpgSony sent over an e-mail to remind us that the 80GB Playstation 3 bundle pack with Motorstorm is out in stores now for $599. The extra 20GB of hard drive space is nice, especially if you’re going to use it up for the $40 downloadable version of Warhawk. However, the 80GB Playstation 3 doesn’t have the emotion engine. If you want to grab a Playstation 3 with better emulation versatility or just want to save $100 the 60GB model is for you. Sony predicts that the 60GB Playstation 3s will cycle out of the market sometime this fall.

The 60GB PS3 is currently enjoying a surge in sales following a price reduction in the US and Canada on July 9 of $100 to $499/$549 CND.  Since that date, unit sales at the company's top five retailers have jumped 113% when compared to the average sales of four weeks prior to the price drop.  SCEA will continue to sell the 60GB in the US and Canada at the new, reduced price until current inventory is depleted, which is predicted to be this fall based on current consumer demand.

I wonder if the 60GB Playstation 3 will be sought after by collectors in the future. The hard drive space problem can always be solved by swapping drives, but you can’t wire an emotion engine into an 80GB Playstation 3.

I hope they would drop the price for the standalone Motor Storm game soon, maybe it could be the first PS3 greatest hits.

Given Sony’s tone of “SIXAXIS is the future”, I’ve decided that I’m just going to keep my PS2 around until the end of time just so I can have rumble. I guess that’s good for sony in the sense that I’m not wedded to the PS3 having backward compatibility but it is bad for sony in the sense that lack of backward compatibility is another $100 off the price of the PS3 that needs to come off before I will even remotely considering buying one (and likely another $100 off that before I’ll actually buy one…ie, $300)
