Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer coming to the US?

shiren.jpgAs our second Sega rumor today EB Games has a listing for Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer, which is likely to be Fushigi no Dungeon: Fuurai no Shiren DS. The DS game is actually a remake of the Super Famicom game and this may be the first time people can experience Shiren’s adventure in English without having to resort to a translation patch. Sega published the DS game last year in Japan and if all is right in the world they will bring it to North America in the future.

oh NO freaking way!!! I loved the sufami version, and I’ve been meaning to try the DS remake forever. Fans of Izuna, don’t miss out!

  • Is this going to be an actual roguelike, or more like a dumbed-down roguelike ala Pokemon Mystery Dungeon?

  • I haven’t played the DS one, but I remember it being rough on the Super Famicom with way too much dying. I think this column describes the gameplay really well:

It’s based on the Super Famicom version though and I’m not sure if Sega kept the same level of difficulty.

I haven’t played the SNES one either, however it’s lauded as the best console roguelike bar none. I read a good bit of the GameFAQs boards and there were some comments about the DS version being a bit easier/different than the SNES one.
I’m very excited! Hopefully the rumors are true!

Shiren for SNES is really sharp, and was much better than Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. Note that “better” to a roguelike fan means harder, requires more strategy, actually means the player must think about the game, and that it can’t be played on autopilot. All these things are severely devalued among current RPG players….
