Vanillaware’s next: Oboro Muramasa Youtouden

oboro1.jpgI think everyone else is talking about this by now, but these scans Jeff L. sent in (thanks again!) are so beautiful we have to post something about Oboro Muramasa Youtouden. The title is coming out for the Wii and it’s made by the creators of Odin Sphere. Surprise! Like Odin Sphere this is being coined as a 2D action RPG with “non-stop battles” as described by Famitsu.

Two characters have been revealed Kisuke (the blue warrior with the scarf on the right) who is searching to piece together his memory and Momohime, who has not appeared in any gameplay shots. The gameplay consists of your 2D action fare with the addition of waggle to cast ninpo. Another tidbit about the game is Marvelous is acting as the publisher and they have it slated for 2008. You know Atlus has a decent relationship with Marvelous and Vanillaware…. Oh and they are Wii developers too!

that artwork is amazing, though I wish it was less RPG and more all-out action, like the NES ninja gaiden series or the TG16 ninja spirit.

Vanillaware should just ditch the RPG lements.. and maybe it’ll actually play like a 2d action game.

  • I think the RPG elements should stay to give them game some depth and I love the art style Vanillaware uses for this game and Odin Sphere. I am actually surprised that this game was not planned to be released for the PS2, Oh well, I am just really hoping that this gets a N.A. release date.

  • Hello Hello

I’m a big fan of Odin Sphere and I hope this gets published in North America.

I’m with SoulCaster, it’s actually surprising Oboro Muramasa Youtouden isn’t planned for the PS2 as well. I suppose Vanillaware could easily convert this to PS2 if they deem it necessary, after Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire I definitely think there’s a market for 2D titles on the console now that Sony has exhausted its tight grip on what they will allow on the PS2. Only time tells if this will happen or not.

I have to applaud Vanaillaware for keeping the 2D genre alive with titles such as the aforementioned Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire, and naturally anticipate further developments along the line about this Wii title’s future, including details about this game’s characters, story, and battle system on Siliconera.

Odin Sphere actually showed how aged the PS2 hardware really is, as though the engine used would be best suited for something a little stronger, like Wii.

Still think Odin Sphere should have been ported to Wii also.
