The latest issue of Famitsu is reporting that Metal Slug 7, the latest in SNK's popular series of 2D sidescrolling shooters, is heading to the DS. What's strange, though, is that apparently the game is ONLY heading to the DS. No report yet on how the game will play, or how the touchscreen will be utilized (if at all). This seems like a strange move on SNK's part, given Metal Slug's history as an arcade series first and foremost. But then again, with the arcade scene's slow decline, and the staggering sales of the DS, I guess it does make sense, from a profit standpoint (Dragon Quest IX anyone?).
Some fans are whining simply because it’s on the DS, and I don’t see why. The DS is more than capable, it’s all up to SNK to make it work. Now if they announce touch screen controls… all will go to shit in the land of SNK.
SNK developing Metal Slug 7 exclusively for the DS just goes to show the lasting power of Nintendo’s little handheld all over the world, especially in Japan where I hear it isn’t the norm to see them sold out in gaming stores. One thing’s for sure though, I simply can’t wait to read some hands on impressions of Metal Slug 7, not to mention view some screens and videos of this game in action.

DUDE! Contra 4, now this?! Wow, that is beyond awesome. I yet have to play MS6 though… I’ll probably pick up Metal Slug Anthology someday (should I get the Wii or PS2 version? the PSP version sounds cool but I don’t have $150 to buy the console).
