Watch - Disgaea 3’s opening movie

By Spencer . January 14, 2008 . 12:05pm

NIS America hasn’t officially announced Disgaea 3 for North America, but it’s coming to Japan at the end of this month. Lahar noticed the opening video has been circulating the web and sent us a link with the opening video (thanks!). There isn’t any gameplay footage to see, but you can meet Mao and the cast in anime form.

Disgaea 3… Why are you on PS3, WHY!? (sniff)

This is one of those titles where saying it was better off on PS2 (and more lucrative) wouldn’t be a lie. (Not that I’m rooting for PS2, but at least I have one, along with pretty much every disgaea fan)

JeremyR Says:

Well, wouldn’t you get tired of using the same engine for game after game after game after game? While not exactly pushing the PS3’s graphics capabilities, Disgaea 3 likely couldn’t be done on the PS2. It never really hit me until Disgaea PSP, but pretty much everything in the game (other than the cutscene speech) is loaded into system memory to cut down on loading times. Imagine how much extra stuff can be fit in 512 megs of ram instead of 32.

And really, until they put the game out, they don’t know if it will be more lucrative on the PS2 or PS3. There’s not much competition on the PS3

I think the install base of the PS3 versus the install base of the PS2 really speaks for which system would have been better suited for this game. Plus, Sony is notorious for being complete Nazis about which games they’ll allow for publishing in the US. Disgaea didn’t even look that great by PS2 standards, and now you have a game that looks almost identical on the PS3. Unless Sony is going to be a lot more relaxed this time around, I’m not expecting a US release.

Hello Hello Says:

This opening video was pretty bad, and I say that as someone who really liked Disgaea 2’s opening.

@ JeremyR

Didn’t you see the ingame graphics yet? (I know you said you did, but really take a second look) I swear, the sprites are the ones meant for PS2 SD resolution and PSP; I really can’t understand why it’s coming primarily on PS3, other than, when PS3 shipped everyone thought it would lead the market.

Disgaea didn’t push the PS2, and this one wouldn’t push the PS2 either, sure you can fill the RAM with whatever you want; but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done just the same, it’s not like the game primes at having draw distance, since it uses a perspective that doesn’t allow it. (and the PS3 version instead of adding more detail most of the time just upscales stuff)

hilary Says:

did none of you think that maybe sony puts a stipulation into their contracts stating all new games must be released for ps3?
it seems kind of obvious to me.
the ps3 didn’t sell nearly as well as they anticipated.
most people who chose not to buy one seem to be saying it’s because of a lack of interest in the games that are already out for it.
so, why not force companies to make games for their newer system they’re trying to get off their hands?
why would sony want you to buy another ps2 game when you already have the system?
better for you to buy both so they get $460 from you instead of just $60.

and before anyone tries to tell me that my theory is stupid because disgaea is not a terribly well known game, i want to state that my implication is not that sony is dependent on nis to sell ps3s. rather that they’re doing this with every company they deal with.
it just makes sense.
