Watch - Nostalgia in Sega Superstar Tennis

By Dan Zuccarelli . February 1, 2008 . 8:00am

Out to prove that Nintendo's not the only one that can mine it's back catalog for characters to put into sports games, Sega is here with a tennis game filled with it's mascots.

Personally, I love the idea though I'd need something to differentiate it from the Mario Tennis game. I played the hell out of that one and if this is just another trip down that road with different characters I'll be bummed.

The ball was out, why are they even trying to send it back? Oh wait, retarded matrix like abilities, right.

hmmm, why is this labeled X360 in the tags? it’s also coming on PS2, PSP and Wii.

Nevertheless, I still hope Sega puta a online mode for the Wii version.

If this plays anything like Sega’s own Virtua Tennis series, except with actual Sega character, I suppose there’s an off chance Sega Superstar Tennis could turn out good, if not decent.

Being a long time Sega fan since the Master System days, I’m pretty excited about this, despite the blunders and mishaps, especially with Sonic, they have made over the years ever since leaving the hardware business with the fall of the Dreamcast. Nevertheless, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt this time around, as after all, Virtua Tennis 3 on the 360 was an excellent game only furthered to greatness thanks to its wonderful online play and modes, giving it a strong advantage over the arcade and PS3 versions, despite the latter’s sloppily put together motion controls through the Six-Axis.

Although honestly, while I’d still rather see AM2 develop a true sequel to Fighter’s Megamix on the Saturn for next-gen consoles or even for the arcades, or better yet in my wildest dreams see the entire roster of Sega characters included in Sega Superstar Tennis as unlockable fighters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the oldschool Sega gamer in my heart can’t resist the charm of getting the chance of playing as one of my favorite Sega characters such as Beat, NiGHTS, Alex Kidd, and naturally, Sonic the Hedgehog, of course, but I really think that last character goes without saying, all in one crossover title.

I agree with Veilknight. I’m dubious as to whether this is going to be good or even, you know, not awful (given SEGA’s track record of late), but getting to play as Ulala!? I’m sold.
