Square Enix publishing Space Invaders Extreme outside of Japan?

By Spencer . February 21, 2008 . 11:52pm

se.jpgSpace Invaders Extreme landed in Japan yesterday and a copy should by flying over the Pacific Ocean to me sometime in the near future. However, I might have jumped the gun on importing it because chances are Space Invaders Extreme and Arkanoid DS are getting an official release in North America.

Gamestop has listings up for the two DS games and the PSP version of Space Invaders Extreme. I suppose I should have seen this coming considering the cost to localize these games is low and Taito is owned by Square Enix. They may even be the company publishing these retro gems in the USA, which would make these the first Taito games published with a Square Enix stamp. For $20 both of these are a steal. The price is way cheaper than importing and even cheaper than purchasing them in Japan. While this news is completely unofficial now (despite the ESRB labeled box art) I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this rumor is true.

Arkanoid on the DS + 20 dollar price tag + wifi = Greatest game of my life.

I really want the Vaus controller to come with it though…

I tried it yesterday night and was blown away. It’s almost rez-like, with the music and all. GREAT shmup.

Wow, I really want Arkanoid. Hopefully playing the US game and getting the paddle attachment imported, they will still interact with each other.

much cooler than i expected. enjoying it, though it does start to feel a bit redundant after level 4 or so. and i can’t really discern and differences between levels other than the bosses. it all seems so random and fast. still pretty neat.

Will Arkanoid be coming with paddle controller? If not I guess I’ll be importing it anyway. Also will the US releases of the games support the paddle controller even if they don’t sell the controller here?

@SteveJ – Considering how neither of these have been officially announced the only answer I can give is “I don’t know.” Honestly, I doubt the paddle controller will get released, but I imagine both US versions will support it. This is just a “best guess” though so you may be better off waiting for an announcement before importing one.

$30 says it gets announced the same day it goes on weekly special at Play-asia
