Sky Kid gets caught in the WiiWare storm

skykid.jpgUnlike Japan, Nintendo is mixing up Mondays with a steady stream of Virtual Console releases and WiiWare games in North America. This week Critter Round-Up from Konami and Star Solider R are the brand new titles. Both are bound to get much attention than poor Sky Kid, a NES port of a Namco arcade game released by Sunsoft in North America. Sky Kid and its pixilated planes cost 500 points ($5).

Suddenly, Star Solider R for 300 Wii Points more (a total of $8) sounds much more interesting in comparison. Despite Star Solider R’s woefully short length I’m positive I would play it more than Sky Kid. Critter Round-Up is probably the best bang for your buck out of the three even though it’s the most expensive game this week at 1,000 Wii Points ($10).

I like the battle between the new and the old. This match up seems like a no brainer, but I’m curious to see what people pick when Nintendo lines up a retro classic against software developed specifically for the Wii. WiiWare versus Virtual Console, fight!

I really, really want to pick up Star Soldier R but I keep having a raging, internal, debate over it:

Me: Ooh, I *love* Hudson vert shooters! And it’s a sequel of sorts to my all-time favorite on the machine: Super Star Soldier!

Id: Dude, they’re charging you $8 for something they normally give you as part of a full game. Are you out of your mind?

Me: But I have to because I buy *every* shooter that comes out!and if I don’t buy this they won’t make more!!

Id: You idiot! It’s because of people like you that politicians inimical to your interests keep getting elected because you insisit on supporting them due to their party affiliation, i.e. if you keep rewarding bad behavior, don’t be surprised when you end up with “Super Star Soldier S: The Other 5 Minutes” in 6 months.

    Me: but, but, but…

Id: no buts: I’m drawing the line. Look, you got Omega 5 for $10 from the *same* publisher and that’s at least a full (if stupidly easy) game. No, if you’re gonig to buy something, it’ll be a silent vote of protest–you’re getting SkyKid.

Me: that game sucks! You can’t make me!!

Id: the hell I can’t. If you don’t listen to me I’ll make sure you have to spend the rest of your life on lithium because I’ll never shut up about it!

    Me: sigh…

    And the debate continues…

Yeah, I lost interest in Star Soldier R after learning that it was just the caravan mode and not a full game. Such a shame. I’d rather just pay the $30 for Shikigami no Shiro 3.

  • also think that star.s i rather boring, it`s stars nice, but then it`s getting dry.

Hrumph. Sky Kid’s actually a very underrated game, and a significant challenge to boot.
