See these Nintendo characters in Captain Rainbow

By Spencer . August 8, 2008 . 11:49am

Nintendo hasn’t revealed much about Captain Rainbow’s gameplay. The current draw is seeing second or third tier Nintendo characters bundled together on a single island. Let’s take a look at some of the characters revealed on the official Captain Rainbow page thus far.

Birdo / Catherine from Super Mario Brothers 2 / Doki Doki Panic respectively.

Little Mac from Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. In the videos he starts out overweight, but Nick can make him thin by training him in the ring.

Takamaru the star of Nazo no Murasamejo (Mystery of Murasame Castle).

Crazy Tracy from Link’s Awakening.

Famicom Wars soldiers from various Famicom Wars / Advance Wars games.

The novel twist in Captain Rainbow is Nick has to choose between granting these downtrodden characters a wish and using the wish to boost his popularity of being a superhero. Wishes are in the form of stars. Nick can earn stars by collecting sparkles from helping Nintendo’s forgotten characters and completing an action sequence. You have to earn the wish so you get to decide if you want to brighten Birdo's day.

    Thanks for posting this. I’m actually more psyched to find out who’s showing up in this game than I was for Smash Bros. Brawl, just because Nintendo really seems to be mining the outer reaches of video game nostalgia for this one. I’m generally interested to see who will show up. I mean, damn: Crazy Tracy? Who saw that one happening?

  • Pichi

    Indeed, I’m more interested in the same way! Seeing Crazy Tracy makes me very happy, as I never thought she would come back!

    Yo Spencer, what the you think the chances of this being localized are?

  • jarrod

    I think it’s criminal NOA didn’t have something on this game, Fatal Frame and Disaster at E3. Hell, having this game alone present probably would’ve quelled the “hardcore” blowback.

    This game is made of win

    I hope it gets localized without being butchered

    I never heard about ‘Takamaru’ :(
    Looks like a good char.

    @jarrod

    Agreed, specially with Disaster and Fatal Frame (as well as other DS games), because I have doubts to whether this one will get localized or not…

    @ryne11

    Also agreed…

    This game seems to be like a gaming poem for Nintendo and it´s fans out there (much like Smash Bros). Personally, I never heard of like four of the characters before this, and now I´m interested in trying the old games. I hope that Nintendo has in their plans to make new games of some of these forgotten franchises, at least for WiiWare. I´m specially hoping that we get a new Punch Out this gen…

    By the way, according to Wikipedia, there´s already other characters confirmed which were shown in Famitsu: Devil (from Devil World), Otsu-san (from Famicom Golf), Tao (from GiFTPiA and Chibi Robo), Hikari (from Shin Onigashima) and Mappo (from GiFTPiA).
