Want a (relatively) cheaper PS3? Go to Korea

Sony finally got around to proclaiming the death of the 40GB Playstation 3/Sixaxis package and announcing the 80GB/Dualshock 3 replacement in other regions. Sony Computer Entertainment America presented the 80GB PS3 at their E3 press conference and said it would be sold for $399 in North America. In South Korea the same package is being sold for 388,000 won or $359 American dollars. Not too shabby considering the Xbox 360 price break in North America and Japan doesn’t apply there. The hard drive-less Xbox 360 Arcade still costs 299,900 won ($270) in Seoul.

Korean PS3s have an additional feature, Mega TV. This high definition IPTV service makes the PS3 a set top box for news and tear jerking Korean dramas.

Here’s a video of what we’re missing out on how Mega TV works.

I would give me left feet for watching Korean Drama live on my PS3.
And i would give me whole left leg for watching Japanese TV.
Or i just buy me a Satellite with World Wide Programms.

Does the 80G have decent PS2 playback, or is it null like [most] other versions of the PS3? I’ve been meaning to pick one up, and it is discouraging if I can’t play some of the newer PS2 RPGs (Or even some older ones I missed).

Are PS3 games generally cheaper in South Korea?

@Me – The 80GB – not the new one with the Dualshock 3 – is actually decent with backwards compatibility. You can play core RPGs like FFXII and P3 with it.

@matty – Nah, not really. There isn’t as much of a used market like in Japan either.

Ok cool. I checked at 2 EB Games and a Sony Store, they both said the PS3 is ‘like the Wii when it was first announced, impossible to find’ when I would ask for the older 80GB. According to Wikipedia it is still being produced, so I will hunt one down eventually, hopefully. I’ll just buy some Dualshock3 controllers with it… They are compatible I assume so.

Sony likes to make things complicated. :P
