If this isn't just a temporary premise for the first 1/3 or 1/4 of the game, it's reading more like an offshoot entry than a true numbered sequel to the franchise. It could work out if a lot of the quests relate to one another and make for a major story arc in bite-sized chunks, but whatever. It'll be fun and all, but I like cohesive stories with an ultimate goal and solid direction. I'm not fond of quests as the focus, compared to being offered as an extra (see: Persona 4). This does not bode well, as the RPG formula doesn't really translate that well to a series of short quests. Hell, maybe IX will still be really awesome. But I'm scared.
