Budget Priced Valkyria Chronicles Comes With A Bonus

By Spencer . January 9, 2009 . 9:22am

image Less than a year after Valkyria Chronicles was released in Japan it’s joining Sony’s PlayStation 3 The Best collection. The yellow striped re-release goes for 3,990 yen ($43) which means its half off. Valkyria Chronicles originally went on sale for 7,980 yen ($88) when it came out last April.

In addition to the game the PlayStation 3 the Best version also includes the downloadable story episode with Edie, usually sold separately on the PlayStation Store for 600 yen ($7). Would be nice if Sega ran the same deal here, but right now it’s way too early for us to get a Greatest Hits version of Valkyria Chronicles. Ten months have to pass and Valkyria Chronicles needs to sell half a million copies before this can happen.

    half a million? i thought it only sold about 30K ? ><<

  • Spencer

@squall3031 – I think you misunderstood what I wrote. For Valkyria Chronicles or any PS3 game to be eligible for Sony’s Greatest Hits program in the US the game needs to sell 500,000 copies. The requirements are different for the PS3 the best series, which is the Greatest Hits series in Japan.

  • justinslot

What are the PS3 The Best requirements? I’m assuming this did way better in Japan than in America. So I also assume we’re never getting that DLC here.

  • Spencer

@justinslot – We’re getting the DLC – both episodes of it in North America. I don’t think Japan’s requirements have been revealed, but they are and always have been less than NA. Games typically sell less copies in Japan too.

Well I have been wanting to buy this game for a while. I would also like to know how it sold out in Europe/US as the game has been hard to track through the holidays.

Valkyria Chronicles is one of the best games I have ever played, and the art is mesmerizing. It sad to see games like this not getting the attention they deserve. While COD:WAW sells like crazy even though its the same shit as COD 4:MW .

  • jarrod

    360 port plz!

  • Aoshi00

The new cover art is pretty nice except it’s shrunk in the middle, which I can’t stand as a collector.

I have the original Jpn version, I hope they would put the DLC on sale (like half price) so the ones who bought the game before aren’t screwed..

  • nika

@aoshi; that ugly yellow stripe bothers me more…

  • Aoshi00

@nika – lol, I know, the white & yellow is even worse than the red stripe on the PS2 greatest hits, and then there’s the “Best” seal, ugh, just too many things wrong w/ it. In contrast, the PS3 greatest hits w/ red boxes aren’t half bad.

You know if I haven’t gotten the game now, I would still choose original box art over free Edie episode, I’m picky enough to always hunt down originals even if the cost more. Tales of Innocence alrdy has a “welcome price” edition, 2,800 yen, but w/ the same ugly shrunk cover. What gets me though is the extra features for less, they should over at least offer discounts on the DLC for those who bought the game in the first place.

  • justinslot

@spencer –We are getting the DLC? Awesome.

  • Chris

Why are you all so pumped about being charged extra to get the full game? Video game companies are becoming worse than used car salesmen.

  • squall3031

    @Spencer,

Yeah I understood completely your article. What I meant was, there’s no way this game would come as greatest hit in America when it only sold about 30K copies.

  • Adrian

Lol @ the yellow stripe. It’s really ugly, but the price is worth it I guess. I guess I’m being pretty bias because I bought Valkyria Chronicles already and my gaming collection doesnt even include a single greatest hit, on any platform for that matter.

But this game barely sold in NA. We’ll probably never see a Greatest Hit here. Oh well, a lot of PS3 owners are missing out on a great game…
