RARRGH! Here Comes Dinosaurs And Hiragana

By Spencer . January 11, 2009 . 9:45am

dhab We have a new game, a proper follow up to Dinosaurs and Katakana. As the name suggests Dinosaurs and Hiragana mixes hiragana training with dinosaur shooting, but that’s not all! Kanji training is also part of the game!

Get far enough into Dinosaurs and Hiragana and you enter word mode. Word mode sticks to the mechanics of the core game where you shoot dinosaurs by typing romanji, but word mode gives you words written in hiragana. Hit a dinosaur and it stumbles backwards ready to strike with the same word in kanji. This time you need to type what the kanji means in English to defeat it. Don’t worry if you don’t know the answers right away, Dinosaurs and Hiragana is a training game. You get prompts when you see a word for the first time and if you miss. There are 500+ words in Dinosaurs and Hiragana based off the beginner’s Japanese Language Proficiency Test to learn. Over the next few weeks we’ll roll out passwords so you can practice groups of words.

dhbbDuring development I looked at the comments about Dinosaurs and Katakana. Some people felt the game was too fast. I took this feedback and lowered the speed in Dinosaurs and Hiragana. I wanted Dinosaurs and Katakana to have a tense arcade feel, but I realized at the end the game became more of a speed typing challenge and less about learning Japanese. The end result is Dinosaurs and Hiragana never reaches the ludicrous speed of its predecessor.

We hope you enjoy Dinosaurs and Hiragana! We’re working on more games in the future, but the next one won’t be anything like this…

There will be some kind of contest…. details are coming…

Wow, just barely made the second highest score. I could probably do better if I weren’t so prone to typing errors.
