Deathsmiles Gets A Date And An Arcade Stick

By Spencer . January 30, 2009 . 9:20am

deathsm Deathsmiles and it’s gorgeous looking 3D touch up will come to Xbox 360s on April 23. In addition to enhanced graphics you can also play Deathsmiles Version 1.1 and an arrange mode. At a later date Cave will sell Deathsmiles: Mega Black Label as optional downloadable content over Xbox Live Arcade. I appreciate how Cave is distributing an arcade update digitally instead of selling Deathsmiles: Mega Black Label in stores. Too bad we’re not getting Deathsmiles. Well, we won’t get it in April anyway.

One thing we can use with our North American region locked Xbox 360 is the Deathsmiles arcade stick made by Hori. These go on sale the same day the game comes out for 14,800 yen a piece ($164).

On second thought we could get Deathsmiles. While Aksys didn’t release Castle of Shikigami III on the Xbox 360 here someone is releasing Raiden Fighters Aces in the states. The rumor is budget publisher Zoo Games is responsible. We contacted Zoo Games and haven’t received a comment yet. However, other sources say Valcon Games is the North American publisher. We also contacted them. If I had to guess I would say it’s Valcon over Zoo Games. Valcon Games has a relationship with Success, the Japanese publisher of Raiden Fighters Aces, after their work with Shepherd’s Crossing.

Is there a way to purchase japanese xbox arcade titles on an american xbox?

    • Yes! All you need is a Japanese XBL account, but sadly Deathsmiles is a retail game.

It may not be a “unique” stick like the Otomedius one but I’m glad to see Hori is now sticking with the Real Arcade Pro sort of build. Also, thanks for following up on the Raiden Fighter Aces situation.

Hallelujah! I didn’t know Raiden Fighters was coming stateside! WHOO! =D Also, i’m extremely tempted to pick up that Death Smiles stick, but at the same time that’s 60$ more than the SF4 stick. -.-

  • I have a Hori Real Arcade Pro 2 and I LOVE the layout of the bottoms! It’s similar to the Deathsmiles edition and RAP 3 stick. Very solid stick.
To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of shmup games, but Deathsmiles looks impressive. Shooting that steer down was freaky, though

I’ll tell ya, I was really excited when I walked into an arcade around a year ago here in Japan and say Death Smiles. I plunked in my 100 yen coin and… after about 10 minutes I was so bored with the game I got up and left (with the game still going). Compared to their work in the past, Death Smiles (in the arcade at least) was a stumble for Cave IMHO.
