Atlus Rescues Shiren the Wanderer From Localization Limbo

By Ishaan . June 2, 2009 . 6:38am

Atlus made sure to keep some tricks up their sleeve for E3 week. One of those is Shiren the Wanderer 3 for Wii, which is currently slated for a 2010 release in North America.

Simply titled Shiren the Wanderer overseas, this roguelike allows Shiren to travel with two computer controlled allies and rescue fallen friends online. When the game comes out in North America it will retail a bit under the standard Wii game at $39.99.

Totally awesome. We need more roguelike games.

  • lostinblue

    thanks Atlus, I’ll buy this.

But I still want proper Wii in-house games coming from you. (read: SMT RPG’s dammit)

    • Malek86

I kinda doubt that. The Wii isn’t selling all that good in Japan right now. Atlus will probably have an easier time on the portables, where development costs are also much lower. I expect a new SMT to be either on PSP or DS.

lostinblue’s like those “DaBears” guys in that SNL skit when Ditka left, and one of them just decided to pretend it was 1985.

You’re getting new Trauma Center games on the Wii, but Atlus Japan already announced that they were focusing on the 360, so, if you want your new Atlus games, get yourself a 360.

        • lostinblue

And… have you seen how well it sells in japan?

If that decision was made, then Atlus made the wrong decision, and if I’m pretending… then I’m pretending it’s 2009 and X360 sells jack nothing in Japan (and I’m right)

Stop pretending it’s 2005 and people still believe X360 can sell in japan. let alone be a good platform for RPG’s.

      • lostinblue

it still has double the install base PS3 has, and sells more software on a weekly basis.

Plus it’ll have Tales of Graces and Dragon Quest X, more AAA RPG’s in the horizon than X360 has right now.

  • MadMirko

    Mmmmmhm, import bliss.

  • pedrron

Niiiiiice! Can’t believe it! Atlus is king!

  • pressstart

How well do these Mystery Dungeon games sell on consoles (like the Chocobo Dungeon)? After playing some roguelikes on the DS, I can’t imagine sitting in front of a TV playing these rather simple games for an extended period of time.

    • MadMirko

This one sold about 90k in Japan, others have gone on to 500k.

Roguelikes are not simple (well, presentation usually is) and as you know, they originated on stationary computers where people to this day have no problem playing them for extended periods of time.

In the US, though, this will probably share the fate of the DS game.

You have my sincerest thanks, Atlus.

After this and Trauma Team, if Atlus follows up with an announcement for Super Robot Taisen: Original Generations I’ll somehow die of euphoria overdose.

  • I’m not familiar with this series, but it sounds cool!

  • Tatsu

Hooray! This has made my day more than any of the E3 announcements I’ve been reading about.

  • This announcement today + KitN hitting stores tomorrow = Atlus, you have made my week already.

  • I thought Sega might do it since they did the last DS one, but nice to see Atlus get it.

    • 2dere

Yeah least it will get a better cover than the US DS Shiren.

  • Malek86

Was this Atlus’s only surprise for E3? I’m gonna be a bit sad if it is. I hoped they would have more.

  • John H.

Ah, this may well make up for Izuna….

  • Oh my word! That is excellent news. I know it’s early days, but have you heard if a European release is likely?

  • Interim

This is sweet, sweet music to my ears. It’s a pity it has to be released next year… but, that’s better than not being released at all =P

Hm, given the Shiren 2/Shiren 3 wireless compatibility… does that mean shiren 2 will also be on its way here?
