Nintendo Prepares First “M” Rated Game For Japan

By Spencer . November 12, 2009 . 8:43am

image Nintendo published a few M rated games like Geist and Eternal Darkness overseas, but not in Japan. Over there Nintendo went up to CERO C (that’s a 15+ game) and those games – Fatal Frame IV and Disaster: Day of Crisis only started shipping in 2008.

Next year, Nintendo will go a step forward with their first CERO D (ESRB M equivalent game) in Japan. It’s called Zangeki no Reginleiv, previously announced as Dynamic Zan at a Nintendo press conference. Sandlot, the team behind the Earth Defense Force series, is the developer.

In Zangeki no Reginleiv players slay monsters, collect over 300 weapons, and backup other players via online play. Zankgeki no Reginleiv supports up to four players and is slated for February 11, 2010.

  • Is it a game for loot fetishists? If so, I'm sold.

But, I wonder when will Nintendo release a M-rated game for the Wii in the USA. They haven't done so yet, right? The two possible candidates (Disaster and Fatal Frame) have been both passed over, for reasons that have not been explained...

... though I still say that's exactly the reason.

    Isn't Madworld an M-Rated game?
  • Yes but that's Sega.

Not sure about the loot, but there will be weapon customization. Seems the game is about young (I'd guess Norse) gods who take on giants, slicing limbs and heads off in "suprisingly gory" 4 player online co-op.

At least, that's what I could gather from impressions of people attending the retailer meeting where this one got unveiled.

Maybe I'm playing too much Demon's Souls, but that last paragraph sounded *almost* like said game.

Ha, that's what I thought when I read that. 'Hmm... Wii Demon's Souls?'
  • MadMirko
Devs of Earth Defense Force, hm? Reserving judgement until gameplay details surface, but it could be interesting.
  • I just read the words "Nintendo" "M Rated Game" " Earth Defense Force" and "Online Play" and now I have kind of a boner.

Okay, I'm being modest... I have a full-on throbbing erection that could explode at any given minute.

Maybe It was a good thing the loss in the nintendo profit, because it appears that they are taking the things seriously, this game looks promising.

Somehow I don't think that Nintendo's releasing M-Rated games will suddenly elevate the Wii to the "status quo". If Nintendo really wants to start selling more consoles, it needs to find a way to bring back all of the long-time supporters it burned by shunning their interests in favor of the non-gamer onslaught on the Wii.

I question if it was a good decision to let a game programmer run the company. Sure the sales went up for a bit, but now look at what's happening. ANOTHER DSi whose only feature is a larger screen? Reggie Fils-Aime saying there is NO HD Wii planned?

Sorry I'm kind of venting here. I bought a Wii at launch and while I own about 10 games for it, sadly there has been little-to-no reason to own it (for me at least). Yet I constantly buy DS software. It's a frustrating to see that which each consecutive console, the "core gamer" market becomes less and less important for Nintendo.
