New Super Mario Bros. Wii Shatters Sales Records

By Ishaan . December 7, 2009 . 1:38pm

Enterbrain’s numbers for New Super Mario Bros. Wii are out, and estimate the game sold 936,734 copies in its first four days in the Japanese market. This puts it above the previous opening week record for Wii, which was held by Super Smash Bros. Brawl at 816,198 copies.

Other first-week Mario numbers, for the sake of comparison:

New Super Mario Bros. (DS) – 865,024

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) – 256,341

Super Mario 64 (DS) – 120,062

Mario Kart DS (DS) – 224,411

Mario Kart Wii (Wii) – 608,147

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS) – 220,055

It’ll be interesting to see how New Super Mario Bros. Wii compares to the DS game going forward, since it isn’t on a portable system where several members within the same family might buy individual copies for themselves.

amazing, I though Brawl was the most anticipated game on history but this was like a sleeper hit for me

Hmm, unless I’m mistaken, didn’t DQIX do better than this in Japan? Or is it Mario-only records?

    • pedrron

It shattered Wii sales records. I’m not surprised, this game rocks and the local co-op kicks ass. I would rather play local co-op w/ family/friends then over wifi anyday.

    • MadMirko

Yeah, it’s a stationary console (360, PS3, Wii) record which was broken. DQIX on DS sold 2.3 mil first week and is up to 4 mil now.

The Mario Brothers usually have long legs. For example the DS version debuted much lower than DQIX with “only” ~860k it went on to sell 5.5 mil copies total.

I don’t think the Wii version will do THAT well, but who knows?

This are really cool for kids. I even bought my son same as this. I got mine using the service at It watched the Amazon inventory and the moment Amazon received fresh inventory at the regular retail price this obnoxious alarm went off.

  • cowcow

I have no desire to play this game

I call this the power of advertising. And I don’t mean advertising to the gaming community – we’ll get the message through game websites, magazines, etc. – but to everyone.

    • I think it’s more the power of nostalgia, which is why Dragon Quest still does so well, too. People automatically take notice of certain games that they grew up playing. For instance, you’ll notice that 3D Marios don’t do nearly as well.

  • Wow, almost a millions copies in only a few days. That’s just nuts. Still need to get this game. Probably gonna wait till the new year, though, since I’ve already got a lot on my plate.

  • Aoshi00

Very fun game indeed, especially w/ family and friends, such a throwback to SMB3 and Super Mario World . I don’t remember the last time I actually play co-op w/ my sis.

The Jpn TV commercials were nice too. Though I’m not crazy about watching celebrities play, they showed a lot of fun gameplay that would make anyone go out to buy the game instantly.
