Apply To Be A Final Fantasy XIV Beta Tester Right Now

By Spencer . December 16, 2009 . 4:29pm

image Square Enix is opening the floodgates to Eorzea by taking beta tester applications for Final Fantasy XIV.

Want in? You need to be at least 18, have a Square Enix ID account, be prepared to submit bug reports, and have an Internet connection. You probably have that last one covered. Testers will be selected based on the “content of their application” and several rounds of eager fans will get to break try Final Fantasy XIV early.

Right now, Square Enix is only looking for people to play the Windows version of Final Fantasy XIV. Recruitment details for the PlayStation 3 version will be released later. Wait a second, “released later” Square Enix just confirmed a PlayStation 3 beta test! Previous reports said the Final Fantasy XIV beta would be PC-only.

I dislike playing games using a keyboard. Even with hotkeys and etc, it just feels so much better playing with a controller. Obviously will not have as many hotkeys with a controller, but I haven’t found that to be a problem when playing between versions.

Never do PC gaming, so I’m not sure how powerful a game my PC can run. Diablo 2 is the last game I’ve played on PC.

Never played a first-person shooter proper, have ya?

I play FFXI on PC, and I use a controller (wireless 360 pad). I only use keyboard for typing/chat, but if I’m not talking I play 100% on controller with no hotkeys/shortcut keys/etc. (And if I play on PS2 or 360, which I’ve played on both of, I also do controller + a wireless USB keyboard to type).

I can’t imagine FFXIV will be any different, considering it’s developed simultaneously as a PS3 game. Much like FFXI, more Japanese players will likely play on console than PC, so S-E won’t ignore them.

I may register for this beta, but I definitely want to get on the PS3. Hopefully it comes sooner than later.

Uh… they should probably list sys reqs for it, too. What happens if they draw someone and they find out the person can’t even run it? Randomly pick another person until they get it right?
