Vanquish Due In Stores This Winter, It’s A Shooter

By Spencer . March 3, 2010 . 1:47am

imageBut, not a regular third person shooter! In an interview with Famitsu, Shinji Mikami says Vanquish has a mix of shooting and close range combat.

Mikami explains your armor is your weapon and can change into different kinds of weapons. You’ll use these to fight robots. Sega plans to publish Vanquish in “2010 winter.” That’s soon, but Vanquish, according to Mikami, is 80% done. He’s busy tweaking the artificial intelligence now.

Look for Vanquish on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In case you missed it, here’s the Vanquish teaser.

I guess these sell, but that’s really not much of a twist.

I would have liked to have seen something semi-different, like instead of an armored space marine (or short brown haired white guy, the two main type in Western action games), have it be a ninja.

I mean, it’s kind of funny, considering that is the most iconic Japanese warrior, you don’t see that many in action games. Okay, Ninja Gaiden. And Tenchu.

But there are very few ninjas in science fiction settings. Which seems like a missed opportunity. (Only one I really know of is a novel written, or ghost written by George Takei). Even from Japan. It’s always robots or robot suits or schoolgirls.

There’s Metal Gear Rising to look forward to. But yeah, more ninjas please!

    • Hraesvelgr

Uh, really? I thought ninja characters were pretty overused in Japanese media…

    • LORDMATRIX2004

Ninja Blade has a sorta sci-fi/modern age type twist to the whole ninja format.

When did they announce platforms? Not that its surprising, its a shooter so of course 360 is getting it (;p). Though I find my self seriously underwhelmed by this, not that I was expecting an action horror thriller from Mikami , though it would have been nice. Still I was hoping for something a little more original.

    • Hraesvelgr

Well, the target audience for this game, I assume, would be non-Japanese (it being a shooter), so it does kinda make sense for it to be 360. That means bigger North American sales.

I completely agree, FPS are not usually games that benefit from tailored to one specific platform. That being said most FPS’s are really lacking in the single player department as its the multiplayer that gives the game its legs. It will be interesting to see how Mikami and crew handle this. Will it be a heavily story driven FPS? Will it have the large emphasis on multiplayer like western FPS do?

    So, another crappy PS3 port screwed by Sega … Cough… Bayonetta… Cough…Cough

    • thebanditking

Don’t you put that evil on us. Nothing should ever turn out like Bayonetta this late in the development/life cycle for either system if the game is truly developed as multiplatform. I am hoping that Mikami’s team is completely seperate from Kamiya’s Bayonetta team and that the two dont share dev tools and tech.

    • LORDMATRIX2004

Bayonetta rocked hard! Oh you mean the PS3 version…… Bwahahaha!!

    • thebanditking

You can put those fears to rest as Mikami said in a 1up interview that the PS3 is the lead console for Vanquish.

  • kupomogli

Oh really. I never would have guessed. That’s all most of the games on the PS360 are.

  • MrMee

Lol, I’m the only one who seems to be interested in this. Oh well.

    • Hraesvelgr

Well, on sites like this, ones that focus heavily in Japanese games (and often the niche of the niche), lots of people tend to be against Western-styled games, I’ve noticed. No offense to anyone, of course.

As for me, don’t know if want. The Japanese don’t really do shooters that well and I’m not that fond of Shinji Mikami’s games.

    • thebanditking

No I just expected a bit more from Mikami then another FPS (the market is flooded with them). Though I never write games off so quickly. If this turns out to be good and is more story driven the most FPS games then I will quickly become more interested. Its not that I don’t like FPS or Western style games (on the contrary most of my favorite games this gen are all Western developed). I am just a Resistance/Halo guy, not a Call of Duty/Medal of Honor guy.

  • wharcraff

So is this going to be an 3HD upgrade to “The Red Star” with it shooter brawler mentality?

I wish more developers & publishers did this. Look at Alan Wake and Final Fantasy 13 and how long we been waiting for those 2 games to come out. I much prefer game announcements to be closer to a games release window such as this.

  • ndjn3979

Sounds fun. Like my ideal game, in which you can shoot guns AND do martial arts with Tekken-level complexity, without breaking your thumbs and scarring your brain.

  • daizyujin

Well I take it this is the 4th game that Platinum has been working on. It looks interesting. Actually it looks pretty good to me. Both Bayonetta and Madworld were really fun to me so lets make it a 3 out of 3 Platinum.
