What’s This About A Space Invaders Movie?

http://www.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sp_inv.jpg The LA Times is reporting that Warner Bros. are currently in talks with Taito to negotiate production rights to a Space Invaders movie.

Should the project come to fruition, Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan), Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Guymon Casady (My Best Friend’s Girl) would be brought on as producers.

So…not Gradius, not Nanostray, not Ikaruga. Space Invaders. Judging by the move, one would conject Warner value the franchise’s nostalgic value, rather than any sort of storytelling potential.

Would you watch a Space Invaders movie?

  • It seems all the video game films I enjoyed were just because they were so ridiculous it was hard not to laugh. As opposed to films adapting games that tried too hard or not all at.

That said, I can only see this film happening in the same vain as Tetris: The Movie:

    Not really nostalgia, but branding.

Has the average person heard of Space Invaders? Yes
Has the average person heard of Gradius, Ikaruga, or Nanostray? No.

Heck, I’ve never heard of Ikaruga. And c’mon, Nanostray is a really obscure DS game

They should just use the script from the futurama episode, I’m sure its better than whatever new script they come up with.
