The Last Story Concept Art Shows Medieval Knights

By Spencer . March 25, 2010 . 12:02pm

imageAnd mercenaries too. The latest The Last Story blog post also explains where both soldier classes stand in the game’s world.

Knights, as explained by the producer, are a symbol of authority. These armored sentries are in the upper echelon of society and spend their days honing their skills.

Mercenaries live a life of non-stop conflict. As hired hands, mercenaries are often drifting from one war to the next. The heroes in The Last Story are part of the mercenary group and aspire to become knights. Mercenaries are hardened by their experiences. The director says this group knows the pain of losing loved ones, having their possessions stolen, and watching others raze their villages. Mercenaries exist without knowing tomorrow, explains the unnamed producer.

Dear Mistwalker, artworks are nice and all, but I would like to see some actual in game footage :

That said all the concept arts released so far have been very interesting, I hope the game is on the same level.

Mistalker on Nintendo Wii. Im hoping for something amazing.

  • masuto

Pretty cool. But something about that knight’s hair…like he’s an old dude with a goatee wanting to look like the cool kid on the block.

    • Jaxx-Leviathan

I reckon the goatee-guy is the concept for the mercenaries mentioned, knights are completely clad in armor like the other two.

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Hm, pretty generic and old-school, but old-school can be good if done well. I am quite fond of the silver-armored knight, beautiful armor screamin ‘authority’.

    • Aoshi00

So is it really by Drakengard’s artist, if so that’s anything but generic. Also Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and ASH were all old school, but that’s why I liked about Sakaguchi games, good ol’ turn based. Wondering if this would be turn based at all though, should be at some level…

      • Jaxx-Leviathan

I wasn’t referring to the battle system as old-school, only talked about the character designs represented here. And by generic I mean that the knight and mercenary templates have been used in just about any RPG I can think of (of course, this is a medival setting, but I kinda miss some ‘thinking-outside-the-box’). So far we do not know if it is going to be turn-based, though I’d be very happy to see that as well, love old-school turn-based. But if memory serves correct, there was talk about Sakaguchi trying a new system which he had to get used to, though that could be any in-game system other than battling.

        • Aoshi00

The novellas in Lost Odyssey really conveyed some feelings in detail very well, including soldiers’ and mercenaries’, like their despair and reluctance in fighting meaningless wars, though technically they weren’t written by Sakaguchi, but I’m sure Gooch gave direction for that kind of thing. So I think in his hands, any generic concept could come across as genuinely emotional.

Hey, I see an ADULT CHARACTER who doesn’t look like he’s TWELVE! Certainly on the right track, Mistwalker…

    • http://terracannon876.livejournal.com Laura

Haha, that does seem to be the trend doesn’t it =P Gotta love heroes who are 10-12…

    • Tokyo Guy

That’s probably because the “diversely talented” Tetsuya Nomura have thankfully not graced this product.

    • Jaxx-Leviathan

I put my money on the future reveal of at least one teenage main character.

      • jj984jj

As long as Lil from Rugrats isn’t in the game I’ll be happy.

  • epy

    So…. Berserk?

    • puchinri

You mean Guts and Berserker Armor?
Or Berserk as in a class?

      • epy

As in Berserk the manga, the whole “mercenaries that have suffered pain and lost people aspiring to be knights” is pretty much the first part of the series, but meh, looks nice.

Also, +1 on the yay for no teenager main character, IF that is a main character.

        • Hraesvelgr

That is a pretty common story element, you know.

        • Jaxx-Leviathan

I’m pretty sure these concept artworks doesn’t show any main character designs, there probably would be more focus on the art depicting a main character. The closest to a main we’ve seen yet would probably be the girl in the title logo.

        • puchinri

          Ah, indeed.
(It’d be eery to play a game that follows the second half… somewhat.)

          Adult characters are nice~.

  • Tokyo Guy

I really hope this game sells…Mistwalker has unfortunately been plagued by the “Sakaguchi curse” so to speak, in that he thinks of these great projects (The Spirits Within, Lost Odyssey) yet they never seem to achieve the success they should. Though releasing any kind of JRPG on the XBox is a bad idea, I question releasing this on the Wii as we’ve already seen a lot of quality titles fall by the wayside in terms of public interest (Arc Rise Fantasia anyone?).

    • Jaxx-Leviathan

Arc Rise didn’t get much hype to begin with, I think Last Story will get a lot more attention.

      • Tokyo Guy

Really? I think it got a fair amount of promotion in Tokyo. I remember seeing ads in a number of different magazines as well as some promotional signs and whatnot. Obviously it wasn’t Final Fantasy level, but I at the time I wasn’t really following gaming news and yet still knew about it’s release.

        • Joanna

hopefully because Nintendo is publishing this, it will get more recognition.

  • Piyopiyo

Great designs although I wish for a more dynamic colour palette. I do appreciate that eye popping blue they used on the first picture though. But on the last, if they hadn’t “highlighted” those armor bits, they’d just all melt together and be overlooked. Beautiful detailing though. I really look forward to this game despite not owning a wii =)

  • thebanditking

As usual the concept art is fantastic, I suspect we will hear something about this at E3.

  • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Good lord, NOA. This better be at E3 or a significant bunch of your fanbase is going to be mighty pissed.
