Konami Announce Otomedius Excellent For North America

By Ishaan . June 17, 2010 . 9:36am

Konami are bringing their new parody shoot-em-up series to North America, in the form of Otomedius Excellent, sequel to 2008’s Otomedius Gorgeous, the company announced today. When the game hits, you’ll have nine playable characters to choose from.

“As the sequel to the 2008 Japanese hit Otomedius Gorgeous, Otomedius Excellent boasts a significant visual and gameplay update since its predecessor,” said Shinji Hirano, President of Konami Digital Entertainment. “Accompanied by brilliant graphics and an excellent soundtrack, Otomedius Excellent will engage fans with the Gradius franchise on a whole new level.”

Like Otomedius G, Excellent features multiplayer for up to three players either via Xbox Live or locally by LAN. Konami mentioned that downloadable content is already planned for the game, but that we’ll have to wait a little longer to learn more about it. No release date was hinted at either, other than that the game is coming this year.

The announcement of this during Konami’s press conference was pretty painful to watch. Whether the guy announcing it was really a fan of shmups or just a PR guy pretending to be, it was obvious no one had any clue what he was talking about with other shmup titles.

Then again, outside of the Rising trailer, Konami’s entire conference was pretty awkward, especially with the “extreeeeeeeeeeeeeme” guy.

    • malek86

It was the most awkward conference ever.

On a different note though, it’s not the guy’s fault if shmups are mostly unknown today.

      • andref

The trailer for this is so awkward you feel like your watching something suited for lolicons

        • malek86

Yes, admittedly they could have used a gameplay video rather than that anime opening :P

          • nyobzoo

yea for sure, there can so much censoring the trailer, that I thought they were watching something else

          • Code

What got me was the giant patches of stars, bubbles and feathers used as a censor, lol >w<'

        • It reminded me of No More Heroes’ Bizarre Jelly.
It would have been great if they showed new gameplay to demo, but I also like how they showed the promo as is (as opposed to doing something like Ubi’s “War Tech”). Although, like Hraesvelgr mentioned, I have to think a chunk of that room has to be filled with tech reporters for different outlets outside the focus of gaming and they had to have thought “what… IS this?”.
Mr. Taylor was awesome, though! Nice and natural.
The Konami crew had no shortage of enthusiasm that day.

          • andref

Another thing it could be seen as a less raunchy promo as the promo for the US release of record of agarest war, but there has to be something to be said when the characters in this trailer looked like small children and i doubt they looked older than 13 or 14

  • I hope @Konami would bring in future installments of #Otomedius, seeing how it didn’t bring us #Parodius, while #Twinbee and #Gradius are rather incomplete, in terms of US releases.

  • Anyone know if “Otomedius Gorgeous (Platinum Collection)” is region locked to Japan Xbox 360 only?

    • Code

Good question, I’d be interested in knowing this too, the mighty playasia-compatibility list, appears to not know either.

    • Aoshi00

If the original was locked, I don’t think they would change that w/ the platinum reprint. Personally I didn’t think the game was worth it, it was very barebone and lots of stuffs needed to be bought as expensive DLCs, kind of like Katamari..

      • Code

Katamari has DLC on the 360? I don’t even know what DLC for Katamari could possibly be, lol! 200 points for more ducks in your stages!

        • Aoshi00

yep, lots of them if I remember correctly, I think the main game only had very few stages and songs and the rest were DLCs. Otomedius Gorgeous has lots of them too.. and the graphics was not good either, even for a shump. So if people really want to play that game, better wait for Excellent which is going to have more of everything I suppose.. I want to see this awkward trailer/presentation everyone’s talking about lol..

          • Code

Matty, linked it, below >ww<' Maybe Excellent will be better, or even if it isn't if it supports 4 player and the price is right it might be a redeeming factor, guess we'll just have to keep watching.

          • Aoshi00

Thanks, I missed it before. Oh man, I felt for the guy, it’s like you could hear a pin drop in the audience :(.. and did I hear him say “tons of DLCs coming”, not a good sign… this title is so niche even among shmups. I also preferred Parodius to Gradius, the thing is Otomedius was less fun than what I remember of Parodius, lackluster 3D looks much worse than 2D too. I mean, maybe those who liked Gradius would appreciate this game, but this is definitely not worth importing a Jpn 360 for.

Oh man, I think they would get more laughs by showing Robot Princess Bubblegum from the GTA The Ballad of Gay Tony spoof…

          • Code

Haha, yeahh >ww< lol. Gradius for me it's always been a bit too strict/rigid feeling for me, although I haven't play all that many newer Gradius games so they might have eased up and gotten better. Oh Robot Princess Bubblegum, where is your cheap shmup?

  • Code

rar, hooray >w< a 360 shmup I can play! rar, I'm kind of bummed out, the Japanese 360 units on Playasia are gone, and they've appear to make room for the new mini-360 Bundle, at a price point $100 higher then the old bundle T_T' Also is it just me, but how exactly are these characters being held up by those spaceship things, it appears to be entirely by there butt x_x? Any wayss, I’ve heard Otomedius was just sort of so-so but still, it seems like something, I like the notion of 4 player multiplayer which is nice touch >w<'

    • Scallion

I am perfectly fine with butt-mounted spaceship drives.

      • Code

rar, space travel, now in convenient suppository form, lol >w<'

    • Aoshi00

You’re not going to get the new quieter system :)? I’ve been planning on upgrading my Jpn 360 for a long time and am very tempted right now. NCSX has a pretty good price (basically this is like a region free system since most US games aren’t locked), dunno how much shipping to your place is, for me it’s just $10, so it’s cheaper than getting from P-A.http://www.shopncsx.com/xbox360250gb.aspxI’m wondering if I should do it now or wait till they have a better Kinect bundle deal in Nov. MS sent me a data transfer cable before so I don’t need to buy a new one. BTW, I’m sure you know by now, the new system has 2 USB ports in front and 3 in back, but no longer uses the old memory card..

      • Code

Yep! I knew about the USB ports! Even by the time I got my 360, internal storage seemed to have greatly defeated the purpose of memory cards, and they seemed to be on the way out — then they added USB storage about a month later, as the nail in the coffin for memory cards I guess, lol >w<' Shipping is a little bit cheaper through NCSX, but the price difference on the system itself makes it roughly the same for me as Playasia, lol (I’m in Canada just for the record, lol). Although they actually have Japanese systems in-stock. Playasia only has ‘Asia’ systems in stock, which apparently play Japanese region games too, I’m not really sure what the different there is there. My only issue is the new mini-360 is it’s $100 more, I’d have to buy a transfer cable, and a us-mini-ac adapter, too, I figure. My plan was to hopefully try and swap over to a Japanese system with as little extra cost as possible, noisy fans or not, lol >w<'

        • Aoshi00

I hear you, since you have the HDD and eveyrthing alrdy, but I would say the whisper quiet fan (even though I install all the games anyway for faster load times), built-in WiFi N, and bigger HDD are worth it, plus Kinect ready as I don’t want to plug it into another power source, I might have a fire hazard alrdy, you never know Jpn might come out w/ some good games later, probably some creepy dating sims haha.. I don’t think you’d be interested in buying the old Jpn 360 from me right? I wouldn’t feel good about it anyway, it’s the older model that doesn’t have HDMI..So you’re from Canada eh :)? I know the now-tiny 512Mb memory card is totally unnecessary once flash drives can be used, just kind of miss them like the faceplates, I didn’t really use it for anything other than storing my 360 profiles to move btwn the US and Jpn systems, if I get this new Jpn 360, I would have no need for that. I don’t think there’s a difference btwn Asian & Jpn systems, but you might want to check out if the voltage is the same as Canada. Kind of wish I didn’t get the 250Gb HDD so soon, otherwise the new system would be a much easier buy for me.

EDIT: And thank god I didn’t get either the MW2 or FFXIII bundle before for the 250Gb HDD, that would’ve been a grave mistake..

          • Code

rar, so tempted but the precious HDMI port~! lol T_T’ But yeah I might end up just having to saving up a bit longer and look into a mini-360, they are pretty slick, and you are right honestly for $100 more I’d barely get the old 360’s wireless adapter, lol, let alone, all that good stuff >w<'

    • krokounleashed

you know, you can play Mushihimesama Futari and ESPGaluda 2 with every 360.
      Btw what’s with a europe-release?

  • CoolChibi

Even though I don’t have an X-box (yet), I’m totally buying this!!! Thanks Konami!!! I thought this game would never reach North America. (Now only if Namco was this competent…)
