This Week In Imports: Fate + Extras

While many of Marvelous’ games struggled to debut high on the sales charts, Fate/Extra seems to have everything going for it. It’s on PSP, a hot selling platform in Japan. Imageepoch modeled after Persona 3. And, most importantly, it has Saber.

Marvelous doesn’t have much competition either with Densha de Go! and N3 II: Ninety-Nine Nights as this week’s standout game. Maybe, just maybe, Fate/Extra could reach the number one spot.

Only importing Fate/Extra, I waited to get the game for a long time…..

  • TheCleaningGuy

Dang, I hope Fate/Extra hits the states soon!

When it gets first place, it will surely call attention, and then an America's publisher will…., and then, i will buy, and then, AND THEN! i will play it.

I'm…very interested in seeing how Type-Moon fans view Fate/Extra over there. It has Saber, and I know I was one of the people initially expecting it to do well based on the brand. But watching these latest videos, it doesn't seem to capture ANY of the charm Type-Moon games have.

I want Limbo and Lost in Shadow.l

  • TheCleaningGuy

Well, I've heard that the scenario is by Kinoko Nasu, so there's definitely that going for it. To be honest, I haven't been as turned off by the gameplay videos as some people have. I feel like I can't properly judge it until I play it. I really want this one to be good given the people that are working on it.
Still, if it does well enough, I hope that XSeed or someone will pick up the localization rights.

I really want it to be good, but I'm kind of worried as to just how involved Nasu was with the project. He and Takeuchi were both deeply involved with Realta Nua on PS2, for instance. Also, that game actually used Takeuchi's art style, as did Unlimited Codes (even though it wasn't Takeuchi himself that did the artwork for it).

This just looks…odder and odder, every time I watch a trailer. Type-Moon games to me are about the relationships between the characters. I didn't really get a feel for any of that from the videos they've put out so far, despite the school scenes…

  • TheCleaningGuy

To be honest, I'm probably not the person to judge how well the game relates to Type Moon's other stuff. I've never played a VN before (although I will be starting F/SN soon). The problem with RPGs is that you can't really get their overall vibe from a trailer. I don't speak enough Japanese to warrant importing this, but is there any chance we'll see a Siliconera playtest?

Still figuring that one out. :)

Yea, it's hard to judge an RPG by its trailer. My worry is that nothing from the trailers jumps out at me, aside from the “Oh, you can go dungeon-crawling with the Servants now!” I'm hoping it's just a case of bad editing.

Ooh, first time trying Fate/stay? Very curious to see what you think of it. :D

Well, we've only seen gameplay (at least thats all i've seen) so we have yet to see how the story will develop.

Of course, one of the problems (as with all the games where you can choose both genders with the exception of some like P3P) is that all of the dialogue will be generalized, where it can be for a male or a female character, this, of course, kills a lot of the story, and there cant be those common romance jokes most jrpg has, or other gender jokes, and ppl will talk to you the same way without taking in mind your gender.

But well… i first have to see what is the deal before making any judgement, anything can happen

No competition? Why isn't Last Ranker doing any good? Didn't that just come out last week?

  • raymk

Well we shall see how well i does and i hope it does well.

  • Buntar0

It's time we see another surprise hit. I hope it's Lost in Shadow/Kage no Tou (lol as if that would happen ;_;)

This is too much of a marketing ploy rather than a natural design. In Image Epoch fashion, they simply culled together a list of promotional hooks – Kazuya Ninou in the position of producer (gives the game RPG “credibility”; never mind the fact that Ninou isn't creatively involved), Persona stylings, huke in charge of illustrations, song by Ali Project…..

Each element is currently hot in the otaku market. However, they don't seem to come together very well (aside from a marketing footnote, having huke involved serves little purpose), nor do they fit the Fate/Stay Night theme. In particular, the Ali Project song clashes badly with the trailer visuals.
