Help Capcom Design Mega Man Legends 3

By Ishaan . October 10, 2010 . 2:13pm

During the initial announcement of Mega Man Legends 3, Capcom USA hinted that Mega Man fans would be given a chance to be part of the game’s development process and interact directly with the dev team. Now, they’ve announced how.

To begin with, Capcom have a new job vacancy at their San Mateo, California headquarters: the Mega Man Developer Room Community Liaison. This position is going to be filled by someone who’s a Mega Man fan and verbally fluent in both Japanese and English.

The Community Liaison will be responsible for managing the relationship and translation between the Japanese and English versions of Capcom’s Mega Man Legends 3 Developer Room. Anyone can apply for the position, so if you’re interested in trying, see more details here.

If you don’t get chosen for the job, don’t worry — Capcom still want regular fans to be part of the development process. The first example of this collaboration went live earlier today.

Nine Capcom artists, including Mega Man creator, Keiji Inafune, have drafted designs for the new heroine in Legends 3. You can help out by voting on your favourite. There are even profiles for all the developers behind the drafts that you can read.

Even without screenshots or footage, Mega Man Legends 3 certainly is interesting. For one, the game looks like it’ll be heavy on the fan-service, which makes sense considering its background, and for another, this is easily Capcom’s most note-worthy community effort to date.

  • Great! IS SO GREAT NOT TO LIVE IN THE US! …. T_T…. meh,and what’s wrong with roll being the heroine, the roll that we know is smexy, of the megaman legends that is

    • Code

Actually you can vote on Capcom Unity forum also >w< I dunno if it's counted also though. Also I don't think they mean heroine replacing Mega Man and Roll, but rather a new "good" character.

  • Well I’m pissed off! My Japanese isn’t stong enough to apply but I will be voting for RYUJI HIGURASHI due to the fact that there aren’t ne black characters in Anime really n i think there shud b a chance for this to b done.

    • Exkaiser

There are a lot of characters with dark skin in Megaman Legends, though.

    • kylehyde

I second that, also it was the design that I liked more.

    • joesz

LOl! I’ve never thought of anime characters as races before.but now that you mentioned it,its really funny to see that kaname tosen is the only black(is he?) character in bleach. But seriously, you shouldn’t think like that, its for which you’ve liked most.lastly,i’ve seen the list of all the characters in there, they don’t look like black or white, they look like aliens with light and dark skin.

    • RAVENKam

Dude, where did you get the notion she was black due to just having a darker skin tone? The inspiration could have been drawn from any number of races (Asian, South American, African etc.) or non at all (most likely).

On that note, I vote for Sensei Haruki Suetsugu, because there aren’t enough green haired, feathered goggled characters represented in games/anime. No really, I do.

  • Code

rar, it’s such a hard choice I like pretty much all the designs, all these artists are practically heroes of mine, I can’t just choose one xwx~!

  • EvilAkito

This is a really hard choice. None of them are bad, but none of them really stand out among the crowd either. Although I must say, I don’t really care for Kenji Inafune’s entry just because it looks too much like Roll Caskett with a new hair-style and outfit. If I had to narrow it down, my favorites are probably the entries from Hayato Kaji, Shinsuke Komaki, and Hideki Ishikawa (although the light-blue polka-dot skirt should be replaced with something that actually matches the rest of the outfit).

  • goronyan

ryuji’s is so cute. Are those bunny ears? Even if it’s not i would pick her anyway

  • They all look like Pokemon characters.

  • gatotsu911

    My top picks:
    1. Yoshikawa
    2. Suetsugu
    3. Kaji

No clue what people see in Komaki’s design.

  • Ereek

The bunny ears makes Higurashi’s an instant “no” for me.I think I like Suetsugu’s best, but Komaki’s is nice and Kaji’s looks absolutely adorable. I’m not seeing any that really blow me away, though.

  • Hayato Kaji gets my vote!

    • urbanscholar

      I second this!

    • Joanna

third this! I love simple designs and the character herself looks nice too. Plus the helmet is just too adorable. :3

  • neetloaf

As much as I’ve always liked the art style for the Battle Network series, my vote has to go to Toru Nakayama’s character because of how awesomely zany she is.

    • M’iau M’iaut

I’m guessing if she wins her name will have to be Cure Mega.

  • Tom_Phoenix

    I am not a fan of Mega Man, but I hope the Shinsuke Komaki design wins. I don’t know why I like it so much. It might have to do with the fact that the goggles remind me of Taichi “Tai” Kamiya from Digimon…..and I loved Digimon when I was a kid. ;_;

The Keiji Inafune one is preety good too.

  • Scratch me down for Suetsugu! I can already see her (as well as across the second middle row) as a character in the MML universe.

  • BTA

I voted for Hyato Kaji’s design, but it looks like Sensei Haruki Suetsugu’s is winning.

Personally, I can’t stand the overdone Native American thing, so I don’t know why she seems to be so popular. Still, she’d probably be my 4th choice, so I’m happy that someone I at least like a little is winning.

    • puchinri

I was thinking the same thing with the overdone Native American look. I like the design in general, but I wish they wouldn’t make that part looked so forced.

      • M’iau M’iaut

She would be a harder sell stateside, for sure. And she’s already got the Howdy! (How) thing going. That even more plays into negative stereotype.

        • puchinri

I didn’t even notice that at first, you’re right. That’s even more disappointing.
I can’t tell if they’re trying to mix the Native American and cowboy look there either, but the thought of it makes me want to sigh.

  • Suetsugu’s design is super pro. Simple and clean. I hope it runs away with the show.

Second would be Itou’s, third Ishikawa’s. The Mettool-inspired helmet raises Kaji’s to a distant fourth.

  • DanteJones

Wait, I may have missed something but, this is a contest to see who the main character (playable) of Mega Man Legends 3 will be?

    • Yesshua

Well, we’re voting on what’ she’ll look like at least.

  • Yesshua

This is interesting. From a commercial perspective, involving fans in development seems like a good idea. How better to guarantee that they’ll purchase the finished product? Also, it helps appeal to audiences that might not have a representative on the development team.

From the artistic viewpoint, however, this seems a little bit questionable to me. I mean, unless the protagonist’s appearance in no way reflects underlying ideas or themes in the product. Making a protagonist look a certain way is an artistic tool. Dead Space had it’s claustrophobia, and it’s claustrophobic mask. Devil May Cry is all about playing like some untouchable, cool god of youth and again the character design reflects that. Samus’s armor ties in nicely with Metroid’s isolation, and Magus doesn’t remind us of the grim reaper by accident.

So unless this is a silent protagonist, I’m not too pleased.

BTW, the first character on the list is the best. Just saying.

  • Wonder if Higurashi’s design is continuing the rather inexplicable stereotype of Indian characters in anime having blonde hair.

  • thebanditking

voting for the last one, the second one is nice too though. Not voting for Inafune’s because of late I just can’t stand his attitude, lol.

  • middle character is adorable.
