First Rune Factory Oceans Screenshots Surface

Yesterday, Marvelous Entertainment revealed Rune Factory Oceans via Famitsu magazine. The game features two protagonists, Azel (male) and Sonia (female), and in a new twist, you get to play as both genders. Here’s a better look at the both of them:

Additionally, Oceans also lets you ride on the back of a giant, named Ymir, to explore the surrounding oceans. Ymir can lift entire islands and move them to new locations. We aren’t entirely certain of the extent to which this affects the game. You can also fight on Ymir’s back. Here’s a good look at him, courtesy of Famitsu:

Naturally, it wouldn’t be a Rune Factory game without combat, so here’s a quick look at that, too. It looks like Neverland Co. are trying to give the “dungeons” a little more diversity this time around than in Rune Factory Frontier. In fact, that ship doesn’t look like a dungeon at all.

Rune Factory Oceans is slated for a February 24th, 2011 release on Wii and PlayStation 3 in Japan. Early buyers will be able to grab a visual book, a drama CD, a set of guest illustrations and a beginner’s guide to the Rune Factory series along with the game:

well these PS3 screens don’t exactly do the platform justice but the textures are decent looking and it should run well. Though its not up to Tales of Graces F standards it looks like one of the PS2 HD remakes, which is fine by me.

    • Advent_Andaryu

This game is for PS3? It should be on Wii like Frontier. Or is it on both? You would think they would mention that in the article.

      • It’s been announced for both systems.

      • Ah, I didn’t notice the platform box up top only mentioned PS3. While we work out a solution to that, I’ll update the post body. Thanks for pointing this out!

  • shurelia

I am waiting for this game and I hope it will be release in Europe ! shurelia

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

The artstyle wins and the there’s color aplenty. Everything is sharp as it should be. That’s all that matters for a port. Swag is nice but we probably won’t get it.

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

Unless there’s a notable difference between the graphics or gameplay-systems where the PS3-version is better, I am going to get the Wii-version. Might be a silly reason; but I just feel that RF belongs on a Nintendo system.

    • You’re right, that is a silly reason.

      • lostinblue

And it’s a choice like any other.I like having everything from a franchise on the less platforms possible providing I’m only purchasing one version of each product, for instance I have the first 3 fatal frames for the PS2 because I started my collection there and just kept going (and the third was exclusive to it) so I didn’t bother tracking the Xbox versions… even though I have one. They should run a little better/have slighly better graphics, yes… But I don’t really care.

Instead I know that if I ever show fatal frame to anyone, I’ll probably just boot up the PS2 and just swap discs around. (I actually have them on the PS2 HDD, but let’s ignore that) I like matching cases as much as possible.

        • malek86

Mh… if I have both platforms, and one version is better, I’ll usually get that one. Even if I might prefer the cases to be of the same kind, I’m not going to buy an inferior game just for that. For example, FF2 on the Xbox had digital surround, new costumes, new ghosts, a new ending, better performances and graphics, and a new first person mode. I don’t know about you, but that’s quite a lot of stuff to pass over.

          • lostinblue

We’ll I’m not saying that logic ain’t sound, I’m saying I don’t really go for it. I might get Fatal Frame 1/2 for the Xbox someday, I’m not oposed to it in anyway but I associate it with the PS2 more (and they were PS2 games at heart), therefore if I had to choose I’d go for them.

I also have all the numbered Silent Hills for the PS2, and while I didn’t go for the Xbox ones (again, I might, someday) I wouldn’t get shattered memories for it seeing it was a game that had the Wii as a lead platform for the get go. being the leading platform not always warrants the best game, but warrants a game specially tailored for that hardware which is something I really appreciate.

Similarly, I value more my versions of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and God of War 1 and 2 on the PS2 than on the PS3, because they pushed the PS2 into oblivion, whereas the PS3 versions while better… are essentially ports. (I’m glad they exist and they pack awesome value though)

    • Joanna

Same here. I feel like Wii needs more support any ways. So I always tend to go with the Wii version unless the other version is better. :3

      • lol, i actually think otherwise, wii is flowing in money, while ps3 is a great hardware, but needs more support. (because making a ps3 game involves a lot of money)

        • Joanna

I don’t know. If that was the case, there would be more games on Wii coming out now (which isn’t the case) and this wouldn’t be a PS3 title too (I’m glad you PS3-only players can play this too, but it still stands that this means Wii isn’t enough for MMV). The fact that they are extending this to PS3 means there is more money to be made there.

I won’t hide the fact that I’ve got a soft spot for Nintendo. I do. I love most of their mascots and games. Sony (first party games) hasn’t really caught my attention like that. So I do try to support their hardware when possible, but if one version is better, I will go with the better version (excluding graphics of course).

  • Hm… I’d really like to know if the heroine also has some bachelors to marry, so far they only confirmed that for the hero, right?

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I’m sure it goes both ways. If anything I’m wondering if there will be wacky way you can end up falling in love with your (other) self, revert back to 2 people, and get married? Dunno about the dude, but the heroine looks way cuter than any of the girl choices.

Hopefully they’re not siblings (No! I don’t want to see that part of you, Japan! Put that back in your pants right now!)

      • M’iau M’iaut

Well there’s always that adopted sibling that no one knows was adopted. Such usually won’t lead to the birth of an alien facehugger offspring, or be THAT against the laws of man or God.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Of course, adoption. The guilt-free loophole. XDXD

Off on a tangent, but isn’t it more believable if two people fall in love only to discover they’re siblings, rather than two people who are siblings all along fall in love regardless?

          • M’iau M’iaut

Of course, but that would ask some ‘slice-of-life’ anime/manga to actually be like real life. Please Twins is one of the few things I can think of that ever explored that concept. And even there, from the beginning it was known one of the two girls was the sibling.

    • dont worry, there are 0.000000000000000000001% of possibilites for her not have bachelors

  • Finalstar2007

    Hope they localize it

  • OMGIWANTIT, i hope they localize it AND i hope to get some goodies with the pre-order.

But buh, why 3D chars when they talk?, anime style was wayyy better, i dont really like the MC’s 3d model… (actually, his anime drawing isnt as good as the other heroes)

But well, now the main question remains, will he/she have the memory lost at the beginning of the game? *suspense*

  • I really hope these are the Wii screenshots, because if this is the PS3 version than this game looks offensively bad.

    • PS3 shots, you can see the circle button in those shots with the text bubbles.

    • lostinblue

You should care less about graphics. They’re good for what they are a low end RPG that’s cross platform.

Rune Factory Frontier’s artistic direction was top notch though as I expect this one to be. (which by itself makes it better than a lot of HD games that rely on HDR but can’t deliver in that field).

  • epy

I’m sure we’ll get the Wii version but I’m hoping for the PS3 version to make it over too, even if the graphics look like that.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I hope so too, but “even if the graphics look like that” sounds like the graphics have a disease, or a face only their mother could love. O_o

      They look fine.

      • epy

I’ll rephrase that, “…even if the graphics are not terribly good.”

I actually don’t care much about graphics, it’s just that would wish the PS3 version would take a little more advantage of the hardware.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I know I know. I’m just messin’. It’s just getting Rune Factory on the PS3 is already way beyond what I expected. I agree it’s not quite the Tales of Graces F upgrade.

  • M’iau M’iaut

A beginner’s guide to the Rune Factory series….

Find the purest, sweetest most feminine looking character in this manual….congratulations, you have found the male protagonist!

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Nah uh… the female protagonist is most adorable with her pink bob haircut! But I get your point. RF3 had a horribly girly protagonist. I think this is a minor improvement at least.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Ya she is sweet, as are the two seemingly girls from the sheet behind. The hero still looks like the witch-maid from Luminous Arc, though.

  • JustaGenericUser

What a surprise. The female protagonist looks better than the male one (in my opinion). I bet she has a better personality, too. Just like in Mana Khemia 2. Why does this always happen? At least Dragon Quest games make both protagonists look equally good.

I’m still curious on the differences between PS3 version and Wii version. I’d like to say the PS3 version will have better graphics and more/different content than the Wii version. But if they’re exactly the same I’d probably still buy the PS3 version so that Marvelous would more likely support the PS360.

  • regreto

    i hope it’s get localize ps3 version

  • lostinblue

I’ll buy it at a high price!
