The PlayStation 3 Debut Of Haruhi Suzumiya [Update]

By Spencer . October 19, 2010 . 5:25pm

imageFamitsu has the scoop on a brand new Haruhi Suzumiya game hitting PSP and PlayStation 3 called The Reminiscence of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Since scans haven’t leaked out all we have is a name and platforms from the table of contents. Sega used to publish Haruhi games in Japan, but Kadokawa Shoten took the series back starting with The Mahjong of Haruhi Suzumiya. Yeah, there’s a mahjong Haruhi game for PSP.

Update: The Reminiscence of Haruhi Suzumiya isn’t a remake or a retelling of the Haruhi series. It’s an original story, developed with the animation team, that picks up after the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya… in a parallel world. Whether the SOS brigade returns to the real world or enjoys another Kita High festival with a bashful Nagato is up to you. The game has a flow chart of parallel worlds that tracks the player’s journey.

Namco Bandai is developing The Reminiscence of Haruhi Suzumiya for two platforms, PlayStation 3 and PSP. The story is the same on both platforms. You can even take save data from the PS3 version and use it your PSP to continue the game on a lunch break or vice-versa. The difference between the two versions is the quality of graphics (they’re better on PS3) and the amount of voice acting (the PS3 has more).

The Reminiscence of Haruhi Suzumiya is scheduled to come out next year.

  • Japan is doomed.

  • the title makes me think a visual novel recapping the anime and nothing new but yet oddly enough it’ll be best selling game in japan cause haruhi is on it

    • A visual novel on the ps3? Sounds…lame

      • Kris

Sony of America thinks so too, which is why we’ll never get any localized.

        • Have there been a lot of them in Japan? I think it’s just a waste of hardware personally

          • malek86

            Don’t start speaking like YFU!

Anyway, there has only been a couple, I believe. White Album and Tears to Tiara. Umineko still has to come out, too.

          • Maybe I’ve just had bad experiences with visual novels. But seriously, though, if it’s just a bunch of stills with text boxes, couldn’t you just put it on the PSP? It’d probably be cheaper and if the content is the same, theoretically the same amount of people will buy it and you’ll make more money

          • Speaking like me? Wot?! lol

      • Umineko no Naku Koro Ni says hi.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Haruhi is still popular? I thought that died out a while back. I mean, the light novels will never be finished at this rate. The hype died down.

I remember a time when the Haruhi anime was fresh and mold-breaking. It was such a big deal. I loved it. But eventually I found it the story it was adapted from was never going to end, I got tired of waiting and just moved on. Didn’t even bother to watch the movie. Hearing them milk it every now and then while ripoffs like Angel Beats take the top spot saddens me.

      • Angel Beats is very, very different from Haruhi. It’s just that one of the key characters looks a little too similar to Haurhi.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Ok, ripoff is too harsh. Let me rephrase it… Angel Beats owes a lot to Haruhi’s success. There are many, MANY, other similarities. Not just talking about Yuri. A brigade that distinguishes themselves as special and different from all the other faceless students? Random intense concert performance? Mysterious, powerful entities with reality altering, godlike powers incarnated as students? Set in a transient world where your existence can be erased at any moment? Nebulous forces with agents of ambiguous intent that ultimately ally together to fight for happiness or right to exist? Monsters wreaking havoc on the world because of love issues? Low key, last minute romance buried beneath a thick plot? Check check check check…The story might be different, but you can’t deny the similarities. To be fair, what I just described can apply a number of anime out there, so… don’t mind me, I was just being cynical… >_O

          • I was about to type a too-long post until I saw that last sentence. You made me smile. Plus new pic is cool

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Yea, people can get personally invested in their anime of choice. Things can get messy. Didn’t really want to provoke a fight; just wanted to bring up my personal observations so it doesn’t sound like I’m coming from left field.

Thanks. Yusaku Matsuda (the real, dead one) is a cool dude.

          • Yeah, man. He was cool in Black Rain

          • Ahahaha… I really can’t deny any of that. I don’t have a particular preference when it comes to… any form of entertainment actually. As long it’s interesting, I’ll invest the time in it. I just wanted to clear some misconceptions if there were any. I can’t begin to imagine how a true fan of either show would react to your comment if I didn’t speak up first.

      • Angel Beats was epic and awesome, one of the few animes to make me cry when it was over! And it was great!

        • I thought you don’t watch subbed anime? But if you had to choose one, Angel Beats was right on

          • I gave the first episode a glance and it was just too awesome to pass up. Yeah it was subbed (and Im dying for someone to bring it to Blu-Ray in English) but to me it was so awesome (and so many hilarious memorable moments…rocket chair, hand sonic and wings! lol!)

          • That Rocket Chair made me laugh so hard X’D

      • Kamion

The first chapters of Haruhi’s 10th novel (The Astonishment of Suzumiya Haruhi) got released in Sneaker lately… The series does continue.

Novel 10 will probably come out early 2011.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I just want the story to be over.

  • SolidusSnake

Hopefully it will reminisce the glories of Endless Eight.

  • joesz

    bad…just super bad…

  • I never saw the anime, one of my roommates was like saying it was near the equivalent of sliced bread, so I need to check it out.

    • Just stay away from season 2– the whole thing is basically just Endless Eight (the exact same episode with different clothes for eight weeks due to a time loop) anyway except for I THINK one or two episodes.

Season 1 is definitely good though. The movie is supposed to be good too.

      • lcgreen

You can’t watch the movie without watching season 2, unless you’ve read the novels. The movie requires knowledge of what Kyon did in S2.

        • (Judging by your comment, I’m assuming you’ve watched the movie) What if we’ve seen S2, but we don’t remember all the exact details about Kyon’s doings….is the movie still coherent or is the story insanely complex?

          • nyoron

As long as you remember what happened in Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody you should be fine.

          • lcgreen

What you need in the movie is basically episode 1 of S2.
Which means, you do need to watch S2- because you’ll probably get hooked on after ep1 anyway (jks, I dunno)

Yeah, the movie was great. Not enough ponytail haruhi though..(lol)

    • nyoron

What you need to do is, get yourself the episodes in “2009 version” order a.k.a. Season 2 order, 1-28.

Just skip episodes 14-18 – the infamous Endless Eight was fun/rageworthy while it was airing but now that all the episodes are out there’s really no reason to sit through the whole thing. But watching the first two and the last one will give you a good sense of what it was like.

Continue through episode 28, which leads right into the movie.

  • nyoron

Awesome. If this is anything but a VN I am buying.

Hell, even if it’s a VN I might get it anyway if they have a nice LE.

  • cmurph666

I need the anime on bluray. Why can’t I get it yet on bluray, dang it?

    • nyoron

Got this baby on preorder. English subs are confirmed, dub might be too but who knows. Pricey though!

      • cmurph666

        ¥ 29 258 = 370.264577 Canadian dollars…

        Ummmmm……. I don’t need it that much…

      • MemeticRichard

        You’re kidding right?

You’re gonna spend $370 on something that’s inevitably, eventually gonna be under $60?

You’re not gonna spend the remaining $310 on, I dunno, cancer babies, or research towards curing erectile dysfunction for men over 70?

How do you live with yourself?

        • nyoron

The way the anime BD market in the US is going I’m not holding my breath for it any time soon. Sure I could just get the Japan BD rips, and usually I do. But once in a while I like to treat myself to a nice fancy release. Besides, I’d rather give my money directly to the source – I don’t really feel like subsidizing Bandai Ent. dubs that I’ll never listen to :pTo answer your question I live quite comfortably, thanks!

        • By that logic, why buy anything at any price? It’ll always get cheaper. You’re gonna buy that 2010 Honda Something or another? Why not wait; In ten years you can get it for a thousand dollars! Why buy a ps3 now? Soon enough it’ll be under a hundred. Oh, it’s the best video game of the year? Who cares? It’ll still be good next year and half the price!

Some people have a strong enough desire or enough money to spare that they can buy something for the given price without minding. If you really wanted to save money, you could stay 5 years behind every single video game release and get everything super cheap. But you’d also have to wait 5 years for everything. The thrill would be gone. Same thing in this case. Yeah, he could wait until the price drops, but then he’d have to actually wait for the price to drop, which could be a long time.

  • I’m still waiting for that fan-translation of the first PSP that I’ll never get to play anyways because I don’t have CFW….

  • goronyan

i don’t like haruhi, i watched Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu and it was gorgeous but i still don’t like this series (Nagato is an exception).
    Thanks god key created Yurippe

The only animation i’m waiting excited for this year is the second ova of unicornでゲソ

  • nyoron

Well after reading the update I’m excited at least. I loved the alternate world scenario from Disappearance and more of it is just fine with me. I hope they get KyoAni to do some cutscenes, like as many as possible. Would be a perfect promotional tie-in to release this at the same time as the tenth novel too… (keeping hope alive)

  • dusk

Long-Haired Haruhi Fan-club, rejoice! Finally, a game for people who wants a Haruhi with long hair. Hopefully she ties it up in a pony-tail. Because that looks so good, it’s criminal.

  • Blacksofa

Japanese Heavy Rain?! But with a lighter atmosphere.
