Japan Gets Persona 2: Innocent Sin On PSP This Winter

By Spencer . October 27, 2010 . 11:37pm

imageFamitsu’s article about the Persona 2: Innocent Sin lists the date for the expanded port. It’s slated for a winter release in Japan.

As mentioned yesterday, Persona 2: Innocent Sin has a new opening movie, cut-in scenes for team attacks, and a window that lets players see the demon’s emotions for smoother negotiating. Atlus also expanded the game so it’s widescreen, which made room for the turn order item on the right hand side.

Check out Famitsu for more screenshots and a look at Tatsuya.

hoped they worked a little harder on this enhanced version. graphically speaking.

    • They have a little more leeway, at least. It’s still pixelated PS1 3D, but the environments are tremendously well-detailed and exude personality, so they should probably hold up to scrutiny within reason. Persona 1 was just an ugly game at its time of release and obviously continues to be so years later without a more significant face-lift than it received.

That being said, they could stand to polish the in-battle sprite animations for the cast, as they’re not even up to par with Eternal Punishment’s.

      • lostinblue

yes, I saw it suggested that there would ne new portraits/art assets for this one and stuff but the one that really needed them was Persona 1.

  • cmurph666

North America gets Persona 2: Innocent Sin On PSP This Spring~!

    …at least that’s what I want to hear…

    • SolidusSnake

Couldn’t have said it better myself, sir.

  • I’m happy, a part of me still wishes it would be financially sound for them to have made full on remakes instead of cleaned up enhanced ports, but sadly it isn’t, I’ll still enjoy this, but I still haven’t gotten all the way through the first, been lazy.

  • the game looks amazing i dont see why it needs to be fully remade to me it already looks better

  • Chow

I bought Persona 1 for the PSP, but I have yet to open it.I blame my collector’s mindset of wanting to keep it in its original seal. ><

And speaking of the "turn order item on the right hand side", I remember playing through almost the entirety of Final Fantasy X before realizing in the final dungeon that its battle system wasn't ATB, but had the "turn order item on the right hand side" thing. I had always rushed out my attacks as quickly as possible, thinking every split second counted. Whoops.

  • Apollokids

Am i the only one to think this is a lazy port?.. I was unenthusiastic when i first heard of this remake- yet even then i thought it would use P3P engine. Unacceptable (sigh).

*Let me specify graphics engine*. Smoother character animations. What is it in this game, that you rally behind? 16:9 perspective?
MemeticRichard I find you mincing my words very distasteful. I do not expect garbage from companies and neither should you. A new intro movie and character portraits does not warrant another port of this game. I am very mindful of MORAL HAZARD. If you allow them to create this game and support it, then you condone the development of rehashed garbage. This is the same for Final fantasy: War of the Lions and the upcoming Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. These are archaic games and just another way to grab money.

    • MemeticRichard

      Dude, ports in general are lazy… That’s why they’re “ports” and not “remakes.”=_=;;

      • yeah and i would’nt know why you would want to remake it anyway the game was good for it’s time and is ok if it was like the old lunar then u could complain but this is perfectly fine i don;t see why they have to waste money on a game they put effort into making and came out good the first time

    • Feynman

Uh… it wouldn’t really be Persona 2 anymore if they threw out the entire battle system and replaced it with P3P’s, dood.

      • Exkaiser

        Persona 3 – Innocent Sin?

        • MemeticRichard

Uh, please don’t associate or slap together a superior quality product like Innocent Sin with a failed experiment like Persona 3. :/

          • Quit venting your pissy-ness over P3. It’s getting old.

          • lostinblue

I like them both equally, but I feel like slapping anyone that wants Persona 2 on Persona 3 engine (specially considering the “adaptations” the Persona 3 portable edition suffered on the same platform). The game was mighty fine as it was.

          • Scrooge_McDuck

Oh come on. You can’t label one as “superior quality product” and another as “failed experiment”, going so far as saying that you don’t want to see them side by side, and then say that you like both equally.

          • MemeticRichard

@Scrooge_McDuck: I can’t. :/ I hate Persona 3. And after playing it THREE times, I hate it to a whole new degree.

P2 is the Queen to P3’s Rush. Now, all they gotta do is give some love to Eternal Punishment and P4, and its all good.

          • Testsubject909

Persona 3 wasn’t a failed experiment, it worked and it had it’s obvious flaws. I love Persona 3 just as I love Persona 1, and recognize in both of them their massive flaws despite the great amount of marvel I have for those games.

Though yes, it wouldn’t be wise to alter the system of Persona 2 for Persona 3’s. The game’s battle system provides quite a bit of meat and alters the game’s taste if you will. It just wouldn’t be Persona 2 if it didn’t have it’s basic battle system.

Which it does… And it’s upgraded to the EP standard (Persona 2.5), and it’s also tweaked up further… And the hud/UI has been upgraded…

I see no reason to complain, except for one thing.

          • Ya know, after playing Kingdom Hearts for 11 hours, I can’t get into it, i.e. I don’t really care for it. How you managed to play Persona 3 three times and hate it, I will never understand. I thought people replayed/reread/rewatched things they enjoyed?

          • I like how you think P3 is crap, even though it easily is one of the greatest games of all time.

    • You cannot call a remake for using the same battle system from P3, that kind of think is what is wrong here. They could do something new for the Persona saga or they could improve tha battle system with new options.

But not another P3 stupid clone please, P2 and P3/4 had a very different kind of system It doesn’t work if you fuse them and at the same time each system give a different experience that it should be repected.

    • lostinblue

It’s just how I want it though.

If it was a full remake, the PSP could be considered a waste, considering how inferior P3P was next to it’s PS2 counterpart, both 3D graphics compared to the PS2 version and… well, pre-rendered backdrops with mouse navigation.

    • Platyphyllum

The thing is, most of us couldn’t care less if it’s a lazy port.

We never got this game in North America (though I have played the fan translated version which was pretty good despite not being perfect) and I’m perfectly willing to hand over my money for it without feeling any guilt regardless if the company’s efforts are garbage. I’m just glad they threw in that turn order and are basing the gameplay off of Eternal Punishment since Innocent Sin was honestly grind-tastic with no way of streamlining it (EP did a much better job at this though, allowing you to skip Persona animations).

Besides, I’d prefer them releasing lazy ports of old games I missed out on for the PSP and spending more time creating new original material on other systems rather than spending more time creating a full-blown pretty remake out of a game that’s really fine on its own but could still use some polishing up.

I’m looking forward to playing this game (granted that it gets released here), I most likely will enjoy this game much like I’ve enjoyed other ports, and the company gets my money. Win-win situation for us. The only one who really seems to miss out on anything is you.

  • Screw the negative comments and haters…I think this is an epic idea, lol. I could always use more Persona and now I can actually go in order or something. I wish I had more about the gameplay and if follows more closely to the battle style of P1P or P3P. (And a reworked soundtrack)

    • Exkaiser

It won’t have a new soundtrack.

And P1P’s battle system was the same as the original Persona, just with a Go Fast button.

      • MemeticRichard

Actually, yes it *will* have a new soundtrack. Those Famitsu translations weren’t quiet yet complete at that posting’s time.Awesome thing is, though, you can toggle between the classic soundtrack or Meguro’s rap-fest. EDIT: Wow, uh…wow? I just totally edited the wrong comment towards…the wrong guy! >_>;; Sorry for being a dick! :X

        • Rap fest? P3 is the only OST of his that had rap in it. I would call it hip-hop actually. Maybe the P1 remake had a couple tracks with the a male vocalist? I can’t remember.

          • MemeticRichard

            Catherine. :/

          • Same male vocalist for Catherine? I haven’t heard any of the music from it yet. The new opening for Innocent Sin has the same guy rapping for about 30 seconds, then a new female vocalist enters. Meguro has never used her before.

        • Testsubject909

He’s not that bad, don’t be such a pessimist. All you need to do is educate newcomers. Plus, he’s learning, he’s played Persona 1 and enjoyed it, to the point where he wants Persona 2 to have the battle system of EITHER Persona 1 or 3…

Now, he’ll be able to get the taste of another Persona battle system and what I personally find to be the superior Persona equipment system, though not the superior Persona aquisition, that spot is maintained by Persona 3… the bastards incorporating the system over from Nocturne and making it an hour sinking personal modification min/maxing ordeal of I do it all the time…

Plus, they’re far from being as bad as Sonic fans or Castlevania SOTN fans.

        • Exkaiser

Oh, I like that. Having a choice of soundtrack should have been in Persona Portable.

I enjoyed both versions of Persona’s soundtrack, so it’ll be nice to see Meguro’s new take on Innocent Sin.I felt P2 had a more memorable OST than the original Persona, though, so maybe I’ll dig the new tracks less than I did for Persona. We’ll see.

  • As long as NA accept the fact that the game has hitler in it, one of the character gay attraction to the main character (don’t know my wording sound right but whatever) and possibly because of in school voilence. Anyway the PSX version released like more than 9 years ago so I’m sure those issue can slide through NA marketplace. Anyway I would be buying this remake once it release to NA since I pretty much own all the SMT game. My copy of SMT:Persona and Persona 3 portable is still shrink wrap. Damn my game collecting obsession!

    • Well Enchanted Arms had a male character who was infatuated with the male main character, ended up kissing at the end maybe, I cant really remember.

      • lostinblue

Oh, is that why that game is regarded as crap?

        • The game was excellent, it had fast forward in battle as well as Autobattling!!!!

          • Testsubject909

I wouldn’t say excellent, but it was fairly entertaining.

I was happy to see they had pulled off the whole “tactical grid SRPG battle at an RPG battle’s length” deal. Though it made various fights repeats for me. (Move my maid with the gatling gun to the right, kill everything, if it’s not dead, move second character forward, kill everything that’s left, rinse, repeat).

Though it still had you min/max your damage output with strategical placement. It was a good entertaining game, though it had it’s flaws.

          • lostinblue

I’ll look into it then. The reviews were pretty average and all that so I though it was a consumated fact.

  • bibier

    • speedstersonic

If by worst, you mean best in the series. >.> Sounds like you obviously haven’t played it.

    • MemeticRichard

How do you report comments? :<

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

    • Its rather doubtful that it wouldnt get a US release. I think each of the two rereleases generated pleasing results for Atlus USA and they would be silly in passing this one up.

  • Sounds good, all they need to do now is follow this up with Persona EP.
