Marvelous On Brides And Grooms In Rune Factory Oceans

By Ishaan . November 8, 2010 . 9:24am

For the first time, Rune Factory: Oceans lets you play as both a male and female protagonist. Named Azel and Sonia, you’ll be able to switch between the two characters during the game.

Naturally, both Azel and Sonia will be able to establish and nurture relationships with other characters in Oceans, just as in past Rune Factory and Harvest Moon titles. In Oceans, however, the number of characters Azel and Sonia can marry differs, says the game’s producer, Yoshifumi Hashimoto.

Being the standard male protagonist, Azel has about as many potential women to woo as you’re used to.  Since Sonia represents the first time you can play as a lady, the bachelors available to her are a little lower.

Like in Rune Factory 3, Neverland are also tweaking the way characters interact with each other and with the player in the game. Rune Factory 3 introduced the concept of NPC characters being influenced by each other, and Oceans is looking to be a little more dynamic in this regard as well.

For instance, Hashimoto reveals, you could encounter another character simply while taking a walk on a rainy day. There are more events of this sort than ever before, he says.

Rune Factory Oceans is scheduled for a February 24th release on the Wii and PlayStation 3 in Japan. Early buyers will get to grab a beginner’s guide to the series, as well as a set of guest illustrations, along with the game.

Virtual Marriage.. Oh good buddha, why does it always remind me of the ronery guy who married his Love Plus!?

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Denial!! So not the same! Not the same, not… T-T

    • Its not the same >=0, We are talking about Rune factory, coming form the harvest moon games… where you could marry ever since the ps1 was made… It never goes to the love plus extremes…

    • Joanna

Yeah what WildArms said. It’s more disconnected in the sense that the character is the one being married, not you, while in Love Plus, it was pretty clear you were the one dating and marrying the virtual girlfriend. But, I guess some people cross that line regardless of the amount of disconnection between themselves and the game.

  • Oh my, this game looks and sounds pretty fantastic. I think Imma have to sign up and get this game when it releases in the uS. I love the character models.

  • nyoron

Is that a scar on Purple’s face there? Cute.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

There’s totally a story behind that, I’ll bet. Like how she survived a near death accident when she was 3 and her grandpa was killed to protect her or something.

      • nyoron

Yeah that’s pretty much what I thought too. I am intrigued!

  • Pichi

I don’t really get the reason to lower the girl’s potential marriage list, especially if its the first time to happen. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the same or more to introduce more people to that new experience?

    • Ragnika

Yep, it’s just their excuse for not having characters to rehash.

  • Uh.. you were able to play as a girl, after getting a daughter, in Rune Factory 2 for the DS too.. and as far as I remember from reading stuff about the game (I never played that far) both the son and the daughter had the same amount of boys/girls to woo.

Also.. it’s a very stupid reason for lowering the bachelors. I mean.. they already had all the girl versions of Harvest Moon… and now they are not able to make bachelors for the girl? oO

    • vadde939

Actually the daughter in RF2 had more marriage canditates than the son. Both the daughter and son could have a ‘pretend marriage’ with the twin girls.

      • But I bet they took that out of the US version like they did for all the Girl x Girl relationship in any previous Harvest Moon games? D:

        • vadde939

No they didn’t. I only played the US version and I married the twin girls as the daughter. The dialogue at their ‘pretend wedding’ is really funny and much better than marrying any of the boys actually. XD You can have girl x girl relationships in the JP versions of other HM games?? News to me.

          • yeah.. I’m not sure which ones, but some had these intense girl friendship endings, with the Witch and the Goddess, I think there even was the option to adopt a child. But I really don’t remember which Harvest Monn that was..

“The Japanese version of Harvest Moon DS Cute introduces the Best Friends system, which lets the player coax another girl (one of the four “magical girls”) into becoming the player’s Best Friend. The process mirrors the marriage process in Harvest Moon DS; Instead of a marriage ceremony, the two girls have a Best Friends ceremony on the beach. Afterward, the best friend moves into the player’s farmhouse and later brings the player a child.”

It’s even four girls.. so yeah… they cut that out of the US version, sadly. But Harvest Moon DS Cute had so many flaws.. that didn’t even matter to me anymore. D:

  • HarryHodd

Man I hope someone localizes the PS3 version. This game sounds really unique and fun.

  • Looks fun, hopefully the US gets a release.

  • *does the Homer ‘omigawd omigawd omigawd’ dance*

  • vadde939

Very much looking forward to this. The random events and dynamic NPC behaviour sounds nothing less than absolute brilliance. For me HM/RF games biggest problem was the NPCs repeating the same dialogue and the same schedules too much. This seems like it would make the world of the game feel much more alive. Having less guys for the girl character to marry is pretty stupid but being able to have a female character in RF at all is still an improvement. Hope they have anime cutscenes like Frontier did but make them a bit longer than Frontiers 3 second cutscenes.

    • Joanna

Yeah, I agree about having less bachelors for the girl. I mean, it’s not like the bacholettes are reused. Each game has new ones so it’s a rather awkward and ignorant excuse for them to be giving. :/

All well, I’ll still be picking this up.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

As the guy I want to marry my other self. The pink haired heroine looks way cuter than the other girls. I’m make it happen even though we’re in the same body. Somehow. :3

  • puchinri

I’m sad that there are less bachelors than bachelorettes to woo, but as long as there’s a decent amount and they’re fun, I’ll be happy.

The game continues to look and sound better and better.

It’s coming out sooner than I thought too. I hope it gets picked up by XseeD.

  • JustaGenericUser

I hope whichever protagonist you don’t control still makes an appearance instead of not existing. It would be awesome if you can marry them.

  • I have never played a Rune Factory game before, which one would you guys recommend to start the series?

    • If you want portability and convenience, Rune Factory (the first) on DS is the best way to go. If you want the most refined one so far, Rune Factory Frontier on Wii without a doubt. :)

      • Thanks for the reply, I don’t have a Wii so I guess I’ll keep an eye out for the DS one and play it when I have the chance.

        • No problem! Oh, and if you’re in the U.S., Rune Factory 3 (also on DS) is out today.

    • yeah is always better to start form the 1st one, then second, and third to be released soon :), but if you want console power, as ishaan said, go for rune factory frontier!

  • Gestahl

But… can we divorce with the girl? And then marry some other girl? ^_^ And then dump her too. *cackle*

  • How does her being the first time a girl is added justify the fact she has less bachelors? They never had problems before in HM games.

Those guys better be RAZZLE DAZZLE SPECTACULAR. Quality over quantity, I guess. Rune Factory has never had problems with great characters before now, so I’ll expect that here, too. If there’s only like 2 choices, that’s going to be a bit annoying. Better than nothing, I guess.
