Mega Man Legends 3 designer Tokiko Nakashima took the fan selected heroine and modified her a bit. Before we get to her final look, here’s her original look as designed by Shinsuke Komaki.

This design evolution sheet shows how "Aero" evolved. Nakashima believed two important design points were her pink feather-like hair and the "chap" design on Aero’s arm. Nakashima tried to bring the chaps to her legs and changed the patterns a few times before settling on a more feminine floral look.

Number #4 is particular interesting since Nakashima tried making "Aero" younger to find a balance between Roll and Tron

 

A design doc posted on the Capcom blog explains "Aero" is a 14 year old girl. She’s optimistic and jumps into situations head first, often without thinking. While "Aero" is an operator, she is also absentminded and doesn’t know much about machines. "Aero" has a love interest in Mega Man Legends 3. She falls head over heels for a powerful and rash [censored character name.]

      Yeah. Do not like. She was already kinda cute but the design took a dive.It’s definitely the new hair that made her look bad.

      I’m glad they changed it, the original appearance isn’t right for the game.

      Design number 3′s hair and everything else that was in the end-product would basically make something more easily acceptable.

    Well perhaps she now looks a little less like a young lady auditioning for the next season of Pokemon or Digimon. I’m guessing there must be some sort of Old West motif going on with the new game, cuz now she’s got her chaps to go along with the bandanna, and several other designs definitely had that same thing a’goin.

    Gah. If only the Injun girl won.Dashified “Aero” hardly even changed at all.

    EDIT: And actually, she looks rather boyish now. That might just be the larger scarf covering up part of her face, but still.

      Well androgyny is hardly a rare sight in Tokyo. Just take a quick stroll around Shibuya and you’ll see what I mean.

    The Upper body of 3 with the lower body of 2 would’ve been what I chose. But I didn’t make it, so it doesn’t matter haha.

    Although I personally don’t care for this character design at all, she does look like she fits into the game universe. Her face in particular looks to be similar to Tron Bonne.

    Doesn’t anyone find it a cheap bait-and-switch that they could change the design AFTER it’s been voted on? I mean, the reasons people voted on it in the first place could include the very traits that are now lost from the redesign. It’s like if a politician made changes to his policies after he got vo… Ah duh, it happens all the time! *facepalm to self*facepalm to capcom*

      It was always going to be redesigned before being put in the game.

        I am wrong! Again! You feel obliged to correct me, again! Don’t think I haven’t noticed, pal! I hope you haven’t been holding it against me since I’ve said Servbots can’t speak for beans. XDXDNo really, whether fans knew of the redesign beforehand or not is irrelevant, it doesn’t change the fact that having a design change after the design has been voted on is strange. Shouldn’t that call for a re-vote? In fact, voting under the knowledge that the design will be changed however they want after it’s been voted on makes it all the stranger to me.

        EDIT: Truth be told, it doesn’t bother you at all?

          It doesn’t bother me because most of the designs really didn’t fit the Legends style. The base design is there, but they needed to be worked a bit to fit in the universe. I mean, I was ready for them to do some editing to the design I liked most (Sensei’s).

          I mean, imagine if, say, Inafune’s roughly sketched design won. It would toootally have to be cleaned up before they’d use it in game, right? Sure, it would have been more fair if they had cleaned up all nine designs beforehand, but then the contest wouldn’t be ready as early as it was. Bit of a tradeoff to get people excited for it, I suppose.

          Ah, I’m not really going after you personally or anything! We’re still cool, right?

            Yea I see your reasoning. I just thought stuff like the hair shape/length made the original design stand out more.

    I like it better than Komaki’s original design. The hair and goggles were just too big.

    The clothes are nicer overall, too.

      I think we’re in the minority here, but yeah, I like the redesign a lot better. Komaki’s original design just seemed too generic. Although if it were me, I would have gone with a completely different design. Not that it really matters since I’m not a fan…

    I only kinda liked her before, and that hair change completely ruins her for me.

    Though I haven’t ever played Legends or Legends 2, so I’m not really the best person to be giving input on this, heh.
