Chunsoft Blog: 999 Japanese Character Ranking – #7

By Chunsoft . December 15, 2010 . 9:09am

Today, we’ll announce 7th place.

{No.7}

It’s Ace.

clip_image004

He’s asleep though.

Even though he’s well-dressed, and looks like a friendly middle-aged man, he was unexpectedly in the bottom 3. I imagine Ace as the manager of an ad agency, or a producer at a TV network. How do you see him?

Here are the sketches of Ace’s expressions:

Normal, Entertained, Smile, Unspeakably amazed,

Serious, Upset, Sad, Mad, Mad

Perhaps his extreme personality shifts kept him from being popular…?

    I love Ace :D! But that’s probably because I’m biased due to cosplaying as him XD;

Yeah, surely, i stop liking him when i saw some of the last scenes of the game… xD
      Chibi june >8(

Haha, I think I was put off him by some of the revelations. That and he was annoyingly smirky towards the end. XD

I feel bad about replying to these posts, in fear of letting spoilers slip…

So top 6 are Lotus, Clover, Snake, Santa, Junpei, and June. And every entry I get ready to complain if Clover shows up lower than #1. Junpei and June are sure to be popular but I think they’re fairly boring (and June is sooooo freaking helpless). Snake is sort of condescending. Santa has some personality issues, but he’s quite an interesting and deep character. I like Lotus, but Clover wins to me. ESPECIALLY due to the insanity of the axe ending. That look… so great. I like her in the other endings too though.

**this may spoil people depending on their “spoiling” tastes in a very indirect way**

WHAT!?, JUNE, HELPLESS?! Did we play the same game?, you saw the true ending right? There is not much i can say from here without spoils… But June is definitely not helpless, and Junpei is also not boring, he was pretty cool when he pwned Ace in one of the endings.

I personally think Santa is weird, but is not bad, but definitely he would go after snake and clover in my fav list.

      Mine would be June->Junpei->Clover->Snake->Seven->Santa->Lotus->Ace->Ninth

If there was someone boring in the game…, in my opinion of course, it was lotus… She was ok at the beginning, when i didnt knew anything, but now that ive seen everything she isnt that big of a deal, and she barely even had any relationship with the nonary game at all, neither last one neither this one, there is a connection but is not really “WOW” -.-.

      • neo_firenze

I saw the true ending (I’ve seen all of them), and in one sense you can say June isn’t helpless because of the events she set in motion. But even those events had a key component of her needing to be saved by others.

And I’m really more thinking of her personality in the entire game other than the final story segment of the true ending. She’s portrayed in the exact same way as the typical weak female needing to be saved. Helpless, sick, needing to rely on Junpei to even walk around half the time. It’s actually sort of a misogynistic character archetype (which honestly isn’t that surprising given the anime tropes reflected in the game). Even by the end of the game when more depth to her character was revealed, I was already sick of her because of the whole meek and helpless vibe she’d been giving off the whole time. Maybe it’s a curveball at the end to make you think differently of her, but it didn’t do the job for me.

Also, I now saw the actual list so I know which characters are #1-9 in this ranking. I won’t spoil that though ;)

I honestly wouldn’t have put Clover as my #1 if I hadn’t seen the axe ending though (I’d probably have gone with Santa). I guess my order would go:
        Clover > Santa > Seven > Lotus > Junpei > Snake > June > Ace > 9th man

Now that I think about it, I might see myself bumping Junpei up above Seven and Lotus because he does have some genuinely funny lines. The funyarinpa. The elevator down scene. Yeah.

        • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Lol the funyarinpa is one of the best parts xD…

          INDIRECT SPOILERZ

But man you do know that June was the one that…. ARGGG SPOILAR … the nonary game?! you know what is the word im looking for right? She is one of the masterminds…

        • http://www.aksysgames.com Belisarius

          HUGE SPOILER(S) BELOW
But honestly, if you’re reading these posts and haven’t finished the game, you’re kind of asking to be spoiled already…

Normally I would probably agree with you, but I always got the impression that a whole lot about how June behaves during the game is an act. I’m pretty certainly she can’t take a more active role. Although nothing is ever explicitly stated, it would make (some sort of) sense that she can’t really influence the outcome of the Nonary Game, since it’s purpose is ostensibly to prevent her death. If her own actions in the future could prevent her death in the past, why hold the Nonary Game at all? She has to settle for suggesting things subtly, or simply manipulating Junpei and the others into doing what she wants—likely the reason for the “weak and helpless” stereotype you’re seeing. She was clearly smart and resourceful enough to set up the Nonary Game, and had the patience, determination, and cool-headedness to sit through it numerous times. Since she is so passive during the actual game, that suggests to me that a good portion, if not all, of her behavior during it was an act in order to make sure things progressed the way they should. In fact, a good deal of her behavior around Junpei—especially the “innocent” innuendo—seems to be her just messing with him. She obviously know exactly what she’s saying (much of what she says pushes the boundaries of what someone could ever say in actual ignorance/innocence), and seems to just enjoy watching him squirm from time to time. :3
In my opinion, at least, her morals may be arguable, but her competency, intelligence, and resourcefulness are not.

            SpOILERS (still indirect spoilers though)

Yeah, that is what im talking about!, at the end i though June was even kinda scary xD, but i dunno, she is like, the sun, and all of the other characters are the planets that go around her…

Omfg this sounds epic, OMG OMG BELI, HEAR THIS OUT, now that pluto is not a planet.. THERE ARE 8 PLANETS + 1, WICH IS THE SUN, AND, JUNE IS THE SUN, AND THE OTHERS THE PLANET, 9!!! 9!!! 9!!!! omg i made a huge discovery, i will quit university now

Life goes around the number 9…

WARNING, THIS WHOLE POST IS A SPOILER!!!

“But even those events had a key component of her needing to be saved by others.”

Um, did you forget? Every solution to the puzzles that Junpei was faced with was forwarded to him from her past self (save for the last one where it was Jumpei that was left to solve it). She’s hauling ass pretty hard in order to save her future self from being removed from existence. Asking for a little help here and there doesn’t make her helpless. :/

“And I’m really more thinking of her personality in the entire game other than the final story segment of the true ending. She’s portrayed in the exact same way as the typical weak female needing to be saved. Helpless, sick, needing to rely on Junpei to even walk around half the time.”

That’s meant to draw on the player’s sympathies as well as Jumpei’s. Junpei is seeing his sweetheart put through so much suffering that it furthers his hate and misunderstanding of Zero which, in consequence, furthers his determination to get him and June out of the nonary game alive.

“It’s actually sort of a misogynistic character archetype (which honestly isn’t that surprising given the anime tropes reflected in the game).”

I think you’re reading too much into that. Even though the cast is dominated by males, we’ve seen a tough-as-nails woman who could take charge when the time came for it even though she was kind of a *****.

Suppose the situations were reversed, and it was Jumpei that was in Akane’s place, I wouldn’t have misconstrued that for misandry. There simply isn’t enough in the game to corroborate that the writer (s?) are trying to project their misogynistic values onto their female characters I believe.

“Maybe it’s a curveball at the end to make you think differently of her, but it didn’t do the job for me.”

I think that would have lessened my admiration of her if it had turned out that she wasn’t Zero, but I’d have still placed her high up in my rankings. I happen to like sweet, innocent and caring girls. :D

Back when I didn’t know who both Ace and June really were, seeing her not wanting to leave anyone behind and then seeing her break down completely after entering the 3rd door really pulled at my heartstrings. What was admirable, though, was that she had the courage to push forward despite that. Clover, on the other hand, decided to go all out yandere and kill 6 innocent people instead of weathering her pain like June did. I’m sorry, but the only way that could appeal to anyone is if you were some kind of tsunderecon or something.

          • http://twitter.com/pipsterfinn Pip Murphy

            SPOILERS…

I totally agree with all that. Clover annoyed me in the Axe ending, not only because I’d been trying to protect her with my choices after seeing what happened to her in the Safe ending but because she managed to kill nearly everybody BUT the guy who had it in for her brother. XD I liked her well enough in the other endings, but I liked June throughout. After the final ending I actually had assumed that her fever was connected to the split time issue, but I guess it being an act makes a lot of sense too.

    • onilink888

I see no appeal in Clover, quite frankly, she’s kind of annoying. :/

June, on the other hand… Is FAR from being helpless. Maybe you didn’t get the True Ending or something.

I’ll hand it to you that Santa is a very interesting character.

Junpei, I simply admire him for the lengths he goes through to see to the well-being of the others , not to mention he ends up being quite the knight in shining armor for June.

Lotus would be one of my favorites if only she wasn’t so callous towards the other people.

      **************************SPOILERS***********************

I wish we could have voted for Allice, Queen’s Blade has me drooling over mostly nekkid Egyptian women.

      ************************END SPOILERS*********************

Darn it, it’s so damn hard to talk about the characters without spoiling anything.

  • http://thrust-the-sky.deviantart.com/ WildArms

Heh, Ace, really fooled me for a while xD, he was pretty cool at the beginning though

  • Locklear93

“…he was unexpectedly in the bottom 3.” Nothing unexpected about that. He’s male. I’d be astonished if the women didn’t end up almost all in the top half. :P

    • vadde939

So true. It’ll probably end up with 1. Lotus 2.Clover 3. June as the top three.

  • vadde939

awww damn. Ace was one of my favourite characters. I was hoping he’d do better than this.

  • Phoenix_Apollo

Ace was a decent character. He’s my fifth favorite of them all. Though, due to the game’s nature, I expect this to change.

  • PrinceHeir

    i want that coat :)

hopefully they make a sequel of this game.

does anybody know where to buy infinite space? it seems the price jacked up to $70 and it’s only been released march of this year.
