Kodansha USA Take Over Del Rey Titles, Announce New Series

By Ishaan . December 18, 2010 . 12:59pm

In October, Del Rey Manga’s parent company, Random House, announced that they would cease to publish manga and transfer their licenses back to original Japanese publisher, Kodansha. Kodansha’s USA division would then continue to publish these titles in the U.S. under their own brand from December onward, with Random House assisting in an editorial, production and marketing capacity.

As of December 1st, this sales and distribution arrangement has been established, and Del Rey Manga associate publisher, Dallas Middaugh, is transferring to Random House’s “Publisher Services” division, which supports third-party distribution to remain with the company’s involvement in the manga space.

Del Rey’s ongoing manga titles which were licensed by Kodansha will be gradually taken over by Kodansha USA on a per-title basis. Additionally, Kodansha USA also announced a number of new titles that will make their debut in Summer 2011. From Kodansha’s release list:

  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney returns in this new manga series written by Kenji Kuroda and illustrated by Kazuo Maekawa. Volume 1 releases in June followed by Volume 2 in August.

  • Monster Hunter Orage, by Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima, is adapted from the Capcom game and debuts in June, with a second volume in August.

  • And speaking of Hiro Mashima, his bestselling Rave Master series wraps up with an omnibus collecting the final three volumes of the series in May!

  • Deltora Quest, adapted by Makoto Niwano from Emily Rodda’s novels, debuts in July. The anime is currently running on TV on The Hub.

  • Oooh. Cage of Eden. Nice.

    Bloody Monday?! Oh snap

  • I wonder what’s happening to Yozakura Quartet, Shiki Tsukai, and Princess Ressurection. I would like it if they kept those ones up, especially Yozakura.

  • I really do recommned Bloody Monday. The only way it “copies” Death Note is in the cat and mouse aspect. But it’s so tense and good it stands on it’s own. Animal Land I might check out because I love Zatch Bell. Gonna be a long wait for Monster Hunter Orage and Phoenix Wright.

    But what about Zaregoto?

    • FHOIW

  • I’m pumped for more GitS.

  • silver_baron

    No Moyashimon :(

I suppose a title that unusual was doomed in the English market from the start, but still sad to see that it’s probably dropped. Wonder what I should do with my two volumes…

  • Yes, I guess I will start getting Negima! once the Omnibus starts coming out so I can read the series. Im going in completely blind on it (just based on the cover of one of the volumes) so I hope its good.

And Hiro Mashima! My favorite manga artist right now! lol, I love love love love Fairytail to deaths!!!! Im glad they are wrapping up Rave Master (plue!!!), the people I talk to on gamespot union for Fairytail seemed to be saddened that the series never finished, I guess they will be glad now!

I will definitely keep up getting the Fairytail releases now that it still resides in safe hands. I really hope it means that Mr. William Flanagan will still be doing the translation and providing the notes, he was excellent with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles and is excellent with volume 1 of Fairytail

Is the Phoenix Wright manga going to be based off the games, instead of the one that’s out now which is just a bunch of weak doujin?

    • BTA

IIRC it’s not based on the games, but it is “official” compared to the two doujin collections out currently, and actually shows original cases rather than comedic side-stories.

      • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

Ooh, sounds good, then. Or at least better. I’ll have to look into it

  • PrinceHeir

hey looks it’s Fujiyoshi, Harumi my avatar :) i love her ^____^

well it’s good to see their publishing more manga’s but i think it will take around 10 years or so to finish this while japan already has 2-3 sequels on it.

oh well it’s better than nothing i guess.

    That picture:

    “Yes! My yaoi is safe!”

  • Negima is back :D !

  • ZomaNeko

Ah nice! I actually would really love to own some Phoenix Wright manga, and although I don’t have a lot of expectations, I would like to try the Monster Hunter one. The only manga so far that I’ve ever been able to read is Shugo Chara (loving this series loads) and I’m really happy to see 10 and 11 coming out this year! (just 1 more to go o: )

I wonder what happens to stuff that Del-Rey has finished. I mean, are they going to reprint them? I’m still trying to finish Tsubasa (too much manga on my plate), so it would suck if half-way through I can’t finish it because the volumes have gone out of print. :/Or Shugo Chara and Fairy Tale. I’m interested in those, so I wonder if they are going to reprint the older volumes when it needs to be restocked. I doubt I’ll have the time and money to commit to these right now, but maybe in a year or two.
