An Update On Resident Evil: Revelations And The Mercenaries 3D

By Ishaan . January 8, 2011 . 11:07pm

Capcom’s Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D panel at Nintendo World 2011 focused primarily on the differences between the two games.

Revelations, a single-player game starring Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, will be more focused on frightening the player, similar to classic Resident Evil games before Resident Evil 4. The game is being produced by Masachika Kawata (Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition) and Takayuki Hama (the Wii versions of Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil Remake).

The game’s assistant producer, Tsukasa Takenaka, was in charge of demoing Revelations at the presentation. The demo revealed that you can switch into a first-person mode. Camera control is handled via the 3DS touchscreen. Unfortunately, Takenaka ended up being killed  rather brutally by a zombie(?) that latched onto his neck before much of the combat could be shown:

Meanwhile, The Mercenaries 3D, as we’ve reported before is a multiplayer-focused title with the ability to play cooperatively online. Capcom demoed two Mercenaries stages — Claire Redfield in the first village area from Resident Evil 5, and Krauser in an area from Resident Evil 4.

Like Revelations, Mercenaries 3D, too, allows you to go into first-person. This was used to great effect as Hama shot zombies in the kneecaps throughout his run with Claire. With Krauser, he started out with a bow, and eventually pulled out a rocket launcher.

The only other new feature revealed here was that item control is handled via the touchscreen. It looked as though you can keep moving your character while in the items menu, picking items with the stylus.

Not having to pause every time your want to change weapons? Sign me up!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

You didn’t have to pause to change your weapons in RE5, either.

      • Apache_Chief

Huh, I don’t even remember that, but thanks for correcting me. I don’t remember hardly anything about RE5 now that I think of it :/

        • OpNickC

          Repressed memory, lol.

RE4, despite being such a departure from the series, was an awesome game. But I couldn’t stand RE5.

  • PrinceHeir

for some reason the mini map reminded me of the soliton radar from Metal Gear Solid.

“Like Revelations, Mercenaries 3D, too, allows you to go into first-person”

yup definitely a more metal gear style ^^

    cannot wait for this :D

please bring leon and ada, jill and wesker in the mercenaries edition, haven’t seen them yet ^^

Eh, Having to use the touchpad to control the camera? Maybe I’m just not that Dexterous, But it’s things like that that make me prefer analog sticks.

But on a positive note, If I were a fan of the RE series, I’d like to think these would be great titles to look forward to. Since I’m not, and Horror games give me the creeps, a good old Zombie shooter like Mercenaries is much more appealing to me than Revelations, though they both look really good graphically (at least Revelations Does).

Like the games before Reisident Evil 4 :D
Oh and has anyone been getting:
“The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.” on here lately?

    • vadde939

I was getting that exact problem all the time a few weeks back but it stopped for some reason and hasn’t hapened at all recently.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

We’ll look into that to see if it’s at our end; thanks for the heads up. :)

    • Joanna

I’ve been having that problem for awhile now and infrequently. I am glad to know it’s not just me. In the mean time, you can reload all those pages in IE (and probably Chrome/Safari). That’s what I’ve been doing to get past the annoying message.

You guys can watch the presentation here:

I’d highly recommend it. Revelations looks great.

      thanks!

wait, this video is for SF4? The sound and picture being out of sync was a bit distracting, I guess it was recorded from ustream live.. I like Ono’s T-shirt, funny he had to announce the title twice to get some reaction out of the “sleepy” attendees.. (he was like only play it during “recess” in school, and that Chun Li figure password oughta wake you up lol)..

I imagine the 3D would benefit the atmosphere of a RE game a lot.. too bad I’m a scaredy cat and don’t play RE that much…

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Link fixed. Sorry, I was tired…

        • Aoshi00

You made me watch the whole thing and I kept thinking the first half was SF4 and 2nd half was RE, and I was like it’s 28 mins alrdy and still no RE Revelations? lol.. It’s okay, Ono was fun to watch :) Thanks, let me check out this other video..

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Capcom easily had the best presentations at this show. Sakurai’s was great, too. He really knows how to entertain a crowd. You’d also never believe how old the guy is, judging by his looks…

KojiPro’s just came off as really vain and arrogant. They spent 30 minutes talking about their old Snake Eater 3D video demo and pointing out all the things people should take notice of…

          • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Is that really how you felt? As a newcomer to all of the series, I thought the Snake Eater one was just lacking in visuals early on but it was great to know of things to keep in mind for (and that timeline, I didnt know the series was so olde and longlasting over 20 years right?). The Kid Icarus one was helpful as I never saw how the original appeared and all the concept images. Capcom had annoying background noises from the game but used the images to their advantage, though it was too much “Hai Hai Hai Hai Hai…”

          • Aoshi00

Yea, the Kid Icarus demo was very fun to watch (and he doesn’t mess up his games lol), I just checked how old Sakurai is, can’t believe he’s 40! He looks like he’s 25 or something.. I haven’t watched the Kojima Production one yet, I think people get bored they keep showing the same Snake Eater video all the time.. Kid Icarus, SF4 at lower price, Layton, and Love Plus 3DS that’s enough for me alrdy.

          • Aoshi00

@TS: I think it would be helpful if you understand what they’re saying instead of just making out “yes yes yes”? You want the host to say what, “no no no?” That’s the way they talk, respecting and affirming the speaker.

If you still have a PS2, you should just check out MGS3 Snake Eater, still one of the best looking games and the story was amazing.

          • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

I know but during one part it was just him and the lady saying it up to 8+ times in a row when nothing had been said, maybe they were both eagerly excited.

          • gatotsu911

I think that’s because, in reality, they have virtually nothing to show beyond that demo. The fact that they’re still showing the exact same video while nearly every other announced game is showing new footage at this event should speak for itself, but Kojima or someone else from the company even said a while back that they were literally just starting development. I’m guessing the Kojima Productions guy was basically told to give a presentation on this paltry little video that’s been out for more than half a year, and he just tried to BS his way through it.
Yeah, MGS3D probably isn’t going to be out for a while.

  • joesz

Ok and what happened to Resident Evil Portable?

    • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

It must have moved on to being a PSP2 project for day 1 release.

      • joesz

        mostly likey

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000301072427 Mark Shaver

They’re not dumb enough to release it on a piracy machine.

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Dude, the hands still look blocky as ever, I am disappoint. Anyway, I would get revelations as Jill is awesome.

    • Aoshi00

      Here’s a nice finger for ya :),

      http://www.innocentenglish.com/cute-animals/cute-baby-kittens-puppies-img/cute-hamster-biting-finger-pic91.jpg

I do get your point, but why weren’t you distracted by the FF13 fingers, I’m replaying it on the 360 now, there were quite a few cutscenes w/ obviously blocky fingers (and block arms too).. I think the important thing is the monsters popping out in 3D and the general atmosphere..

I think the correct link for Revelations should be this one right? They had to cut short the demo when he got slaughtered by the creature lol.. anyway, both games looking great.

    • Exkaiser

Now that’s just offensive to those of us who really have blocky hands.

    • Tokyo Guy

Well given that it’s a portable game I’m not surprised. Especially since, as other pointed out, even PS3 games still have the problem.

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

(replying here to your other comment)

I think KojiPro just looked bad in comparison to everyone else, who had something playable or at least new footage and details to show off. At the very least, they could’ve had Kojima talk to the fans. It was a little disrespectful for him to not even be there, imo.

Like gatotsu911 said, though…the lack of footage is probably because they’re early in development and were asked to do something for Nintendo World when they don’t have all that much to show yet.

  • Tokyo Guy

You know I have to admit that I loved The Mercenaries Reloaded (or whatever it was called) in the Biohazard 5 Director’s Cut. The original build was somewhat sluggish and boring, but the revamped one was excellent. I probably spent more time on that then I did on the original game itself.

IMHO having both a traditional game and a versus one is a great idea, especially if the versus one can be turned into a full game itself (the Biohazard 5 one got a bit old after you kept playing the same limited stages and whatnot over and over).

    • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Yea, Capcom have been really strong with their portable games in general in recent years. They’re even signing off from the DS on a very high note (Okamiden, Ghost Trick, Ace Attorney Investigations 2…) so it’s really good to know they plan to keep going strong with 3DS.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I am really surprised by Revelations, it looks amazing. And it made me realize that I miss the classic Resident Evil formula. It would be great if they could develop two styles of Resident Evil games: classic and more action oriented like 4. Mercenaries is action oriented, yes, but it just seems like a bunch of arenas and characters put together so you can shoot everything in sight with no real context…

About Revelations, will the game only take place in the ship? Anyway, great atmosphere, and it’s good to see Jill again.

The presentation also made me realize that I still have dismemberment syndrome. During the video, when he was aiming for that thing’s leg I was like: “That’s right, cut off its leg! Then the arm! Oh wait.”

Oh Dead Space, what have you done to me…

  • Guest

What about shooting while moving? I thought that was finally added. Isnt that a big change?

  • PrinceHeir

i just have 1 question about both RE games, can you still aim at over the shoulder view? or is it completely first person? i would like a combination of the two kinda like MGS ^^
