Who’s That Game Developer?

By Ishaan . January 9, 2011 . 10:30am

This is a picture that was taken at Squaresoft years ago. See the person with the blue collar and glasses, next to the lady in the red skirt? Try and guess who that is.

Couldn’t figure it out? Maybe you’re used to seeing him look a little older. The Last Story director, Hironobu Sakaguchi posted this picture to the Mistwalker blog in a recent post. It was taken during the development of Final Fantasy III. Sakaguchi revealed the person’s identity over Twitter.

I know it says Game Developer, but I want to say Uematsu. I think the guy next to the Pink-shirted dude with the nice Stache is Hironobu, hence why I didn’t guess him.

  • Exkaiser

Oh, hey, I guessed right. Cool.

Heh, I actually couldn’t stop that theme from playing in my head the whole time I was writing the post.

    • JustaGenericUser

Dammit, I was going to say that. :(

    Oops double post. Hey fellas.

  • karasuKumo

I’d recognize that face (and haircut) anywhere :) I love his work :D

lol at the face awkwardly in-between the two of them.

Haha, when they were happy and didn’t noticed it? xD

  • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

I pity the leftmost girl behind the guy who’s wearing a tie. I can only see her legs!

    • Aoshi00

Tall people should know their place when taking pictures :(… I thought closing your eyes was bad lol..

  • badmoogle

    Pfft.That was too easy!:P
They all looked very happy and bonded with each other back then, like a family. It would be interesting to see a recent picture of SE’s offices side by side with these so we could see the contrasts.

And sweet God the Gooch still looks the same!o_O

    • Aoshi00

Wada-god w/ Nomura on the right and Toriyama on the left looking over his loyal subjects :)? They were so happy though, doing things they loved as a closer knit smaller company..

      • badmoogle

Except no one will be smiling and everyone will be more serious.
I don’t think i’ve ever seen Wada smiling in a photo.:(

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Wow, I didn’t even notice Wada until you pointed him out…

      • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

I’m failing to identify Nomura @_@ Help!

        • Aoshi00

I don’t think he was on board yet until a year or two later..

          • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

Thank god… I thought i was going blind

          • Aoshi00

Maybe the intern was hiding in his cubicle, stroking the fur of his kitten, scheming something big while everyone was oblivious to his diabolical plans. The sad thing is Snowball I is probably not w/ us anymore lol…

  • Aoshi00

It’s Uematsu right? I think it’s the same jolly look and the way he crossed his arms, his mannerisms are still the same today.

*just checked* yay, at least I recognized my favorite composer :)

The good old days at “Square”…

    • badmoogle

Haha indeed, the arm-crossing is an Uematsu trademark!

      • Aoshi00

yea, at first it was his cheerful smile that gave him away, but it was the arm crossing in the 2nd picture that cfm’ed it, he does it when he’s happy, nervous, or just in thinking mode.. I liked the man, very amicable..

  • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Wow has fashion surely changed in fast and is different, they dress so much differently than us in CONUS.

    • http://www.moonengine.tumblr.com COSMOS

what the hell are you talking about? if this photo was taken during the development of FFIII then its circa 1990..

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

Wow somehow I thought it was speaking of FFIII DS, lol.

    • Aoshi00

I think you meant 20 yrs ago instead of 6 right? You have watched 90210 right?

Yep, the 90′s fashion was great, that’s before all the adult males wear Bieber styled emo hair.. they should set an age limit on that..

      • http://tristsantithesis.tumblr.com/ Tsunayoshi Sawada

It reminds me of when I finally saw the episodes of mighty morphin power rangers during its latest showing last year on tv (I was shocked they would bring an olde show back, cant believe people had to watch it back in the day, no wonder I missed it aas a kid). But in the show they had atrocious fashion :(

        • Aoshi00

lol, just be prepared that in 2030, people would also look back at 2010 and say “What were they thinking?” Hey, things become old school for a reason.. or we would all go for the sterile retro space age style in the near future like in sci-fi movies or something..

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommy-Lee/518924335 Tommy Lee

Fyi, all those extra “POW”, “BAM”, etc. things they have weren’t in the original airing of the show. Disney’s attempt to give the show an extra 5 layers of retro really messed things up for it.

      • badmoogle

Actually i think 90′s fashion was awful but at least boys looked like boys back then.90′s fashion unlike the 80′s one didn’t have any distinct “characteristic”.
The 00′s were much of an improvement well except the emo-metrosexual and hipster style.

        • http://myfigurecollection.net/collection/ashgail Ashgail

You forgot about the mullet D: I can’t stop thinking about that horrible nightmare when I reminisce back to the 80′s-90′s

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommy-Lee/518924335 Tommy Lee

*Looking through father’s photo albums* I’m glad that most Asians never adopted the mullet. Although instead, their hairstyles never changed from the 70′s during the 80′s-91… At least it looked like that in HK whose pop culture was heavily influenced by Japan’s. *Remembers the HK version of enka music all of the sudden* *shiver*

          • Aoshi00

Well, in the 80′s-90′s, most Asian males look like this..

Asunaro Hakusho, hair usually split 50/50, or 60/40.. (dorky Kimura Takuya)
            http://blog-imgs-19.fc2.com/j/a/z/jazzieeaa/Asunaro.jpg

Now it’s all like this, emo anime hair…
            http://www.buzzle.com/img/articleImages/366822-51814-22.jpg

So I missed the simpler style.. I liked Aaron Kwok’s Trunks hairstyle in the 90′s though..

            http://english.cri.cn/mmsource/images/2007/04/23/Aaron1.jpg

now he’s like this.. or even shorter sometimes..
            http://img3.lln.crunchyroll.com/i/spire1/04102008/a/6/4/b/a64b97cd8819e0_full.jpg

I like Ethan Hawke’s different hairstyles over the years.. I’m going to see his play later this month on Broadway :)

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tommy-Lee/518924335 Tommy Lee

Yeah, that’s how my dad and his friends looked like. In my dad’s photo albums from the 70′s-80′s and then the photo album of our family vacation to HK in ’91, the styles of everyone are like the ones in the 1st and 3rd link. It’s like if they were actors, they would fit right in those movies w/o any necessary adjustments to their styles. Now-a-days, for guys, unless your character is a really down to earth character or an extra, you’ll need a lot of hairspray, gel and/or dye before you could step on the set of a modern day movie.

Hmm… I gotta admit. Looking at photos of Ethan Hawke over the years, the guy’s pretty stylish. The little preview synopsis of Blood from a Stone that I read kind of reminds me of Death of a Salesman, although it’s probably very different from that play. It seems like people really like the show too.

        • Aoshi00

I dont know, I liked the 80′s legwarmers and puffy hair (like Wham’s Last Christmas music video :), it’s cheesy looking back of course, now everyone is either bald or has Beiber hair (even though he wasn’t the first one that has that do), I liked the music and everything too, but at least guys looked like guys instead of chicks.. like when I showed my friend Tokyo Love Story (the most popular drama in the 90′s), she kept saying the clothing looked funny, and I told her that’s what you wore before lol.. and i remember my mom sporting that crazy 80′s do.. Well, all things become obsolete in retrospect, but fashion is cyclical, old is new and new is old.. like they keep switching btwn 2 button and 3 button for suits.. Alas, that’s when I grew up in, so those periods were special to me.. I loved the movie Hot Tub Time Machine :)

          • badmoogle

            You misunderstood me.I liked 80′s fashion style!It’s the 90′s i didn’t like.:/

Still these pictures remind me one of my all time favourite 90′s Japanese movies:Kitano’s “a scene at the sea”.Incidentally that movie was about surfing which is one of Sakaguchi’s biggest passions…

I’m pretty sure that’s Uematsu. I’d know that cheery face anywhere lol

  • Icon

I think I see Yoko Shimomura there, too. Actually, that’s impossible. She wasn’t there until 1993 or so.

  • http://www.samuraiprincess.com Mr Fwibbles

I’d recognise that legendary hair parting anywhere.

  • PrinceHeir

    yay it’s nobuo uemetsa :D

I can just picture them saying “Fainaru Fantaji sugoi desu!” in that 2nd pic.
