Nintendo of Europe Detail 3DS Video Content Distribution

The Nintendo 3DS has the ability to search for Wi-Fi hotspots, connect to them and automatically download content such as game updates, rankings and 3D videos while the system is closed and in sleep mode. This function of the system is titled “SpotPass.”

In Japan, Nintendo in Japan are collaborating with Nippon Television Network Corporation and with Fuji Television Network to facilitate the distribution of experimental 3D movies using the 3DS’ SpotPass functionality. While Nintendo of America have yet to announce any such collaborations, Nintendo of Europe revealed theirs this past week.

To ensure there are enough compatible Wi-Fi hotspots for the 3DS to connect to in public, NoE are collaborating with various service providers across the continent, such as TMN, METEOR, Guglielmo, Linkem, KPN, Deutsche Telekom and BTFON.

Additionally, Nintendo of Europe have partnered with a number of organisations for content distribution through SpotPass as well, including Eurosport, which is one of Europe’s leading sports entertainment groups, to bring 3D sports video content to the Nintendo 3DS. Meanwhile, Aardman Animations will provide a series of original Shaun the Sheep short movies in 3D for the Nintendo 3DS as well.

Finally, Nintendo in the UK have partnered with British Sky Broadcasting to provide content from Sky 3D to Nintendo 3DS.  While there’s no word on when exactly any of this content will start to be delivered, however, it’s interesting to watch the successor to what was primary a game machine be marketed as more of a mass-market 3D device.

Maybe this is why the 3DS is so costly, to account for all these deals, though I wonder if they will fully support this for years or will it be abandoned like the McDonalds thing the DS used to do…

That sounds cool, I’m glad Nintendo is tryin’ hard to get people to actually use stuff like spotpass and I hope their just as series in America. Don’t know if I like the idea of leaving my gameboy on all day though. Almost never did it with my DSi, and when I did I got nothin’. XD
