Run And Gunner A.R.E.S. Brings New Meaning To Taking Out The Trash

Thailand-based Extend Studio’s A.R.E.S. Extinction Agenda is a mix of classic side-scrollers and modern action games. Those who love games like Mega Man may feel at home, provided they adjust to 360-degree free-firing. Some elements in this run and gunner are a combo meter that increases with each successfully landed shot, double jumping, ducking/rolling to traverse narrow areas, and shot charging. Unlike Mega Man’s shop at the end of the stage, players can create and upgrade items in-game by picking up scraps for recycling, which fits the game’s former name of Trashman.

In addition to various arms, the game features two grenades. Electromagnetic pulse grenades short out and blow up enemies (most of them are robotic). The highly explosive grenade obliterates enemies as well as opens up hidden areas and passageways. A sample of the game’s HD graphics are below, but what you can’t see is A.R.E.S. running in 3D, the game is compatible with Nvidia 3D glasses.

Extend Studio’s A.R.E.S. won the first prize from Microsoft’s Dream.Build.Play 2010 competition. Sound design is from HyperDuck SoundWorks. HyperDuck spoke up about what makes the special: “the people who are involved. The Extend Studio team wanted to simply strengthen the gamers love for such games that take influence from the classic action/platform games. Their passion and wealth of gaming history knowledge encouraged us to put something together that was representing us at the time of its making, representing the sound and music that belonged to A.R.E.S. This game represents our gaming heritage, and is a dedication to what the Extend Studio team and the ducks are truly passionate about.”

A free demo is available now for the PC. A.R.E.S. and requires proper installation of .Net Framework 3.5 (or later) and XNA Framework 3.0. A full version of A.R.E.S. is available on Extend Studio’s official site, through Gamersgate, Direct2Drive, or Desura. Earlier this week, a Steam version went live with two exclusive skins. While the two Steam items don’t provide extra power to players, they can freely to choose their favorite suit and switch it anytime they want from the beginning.

This relationship feels very one-sided here, Siliconerians ^^ FJ42E-CDJ6F-NK7TZ-DZIT6-QF22I. Come back and let us know what you think of the game, good or bad.

Pretty fun game overall. The only complaint I have is that if you want to use a controller, it’s a 360 controller or bust.

I hope this gets ported to PS3, too.

The dialog in the cut-scenes is terrible in this game. I’m not a pro at English, but tons of words spelled incorrectly along with broken grammar. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Fortunately I don’t have to deal with it too much. Not that bad of a game though. Beat it in about 1.7 hours according to Steam.
